Arriving at a new place with eyes full of dreams, and mind dancing in excitement, we just want to enjoy every moment. Actually, we get lost in those moments. The first experience of anything is very special, isn’t it? When I arrived at Linköping, the first things that I experienced  was the fresh air, bright sun and cold wind hitting directly on my face which gave an amazing feeling. Altogether, it was an astounding experience. While adoring every bit of days, I had a plan to start my new journey in this beautiful place in the most optimal way possible.

  • Things to start with when you are here:

I have divided this blog into two parts. This part will give insights about the first three topics and the next part will describe about the remaining three. The link for the next part can be found at the end of this blog.

LiU Card

The first and foremost thing is to get your LiU identity card. LiU card provides access to the allowed entrances, printers and others. To get your LiU card, visit the international office at the Studenthuset at Campus Valla. Please check the opening hours of the international office through this link , before visiting. Please carry the Notification of Selection, photo ID(eg: Passport), and a digital photo in your phone.

Once the account is created, you the login ID and password, which allows you to access the LiU wifi. But, in order get the LiU card you need to upload your picture into your account. Please Note: The LiU card doesn’t have your picture and also, take a note of the pin and password that you create.

SIM Card

I am sure you don’t want to exhaust your data roaming and start looking for Wi-Fi everywhere, specially if you come from a Non-EU country. It is a good idea to get a SIM card as early as possible. There are free SIM cards(eg: Lyca Mobile, Comviq) which are kept outside the stores. The cards get activated instantly.

I recommend to check the plans online for these SIM cards and choose the SIM accordingly. Most of the SIM cards have welcome offers for first couple of months. It is equally important to check the plans after the welcome period if you plan to stay longer. For detailed information about SIM cards, please read this.

Personal Number

The personal identity number (Swedish: personnummer) is the Swedish national identification number. It is a ten or twelve digit number that is widely used in Sweden to identify individuals. Once you have obtained a personal identity number you will keep the same number for the rest of your life. That means your personal identity number will not change if, say, you move abroad. To get the Swedish ID, or bank account, the personnummer is needed. To get the personnummer, one needs to visit Swedish Tax agency (Swedish: Skatteverket). The documents needed are Passport, housing contract, University registration certificate, Resident Permit(for Non-EU), and European Health Insurance(for EU). For detailed information, please read this.
