How to choose a SIM card and phone plan when studying in Sweden? This might be a problem for many newly enrolled students from countries outside Sweden or the EU. As a matter of fact, there are too many mobile telecommunication companies in Sweden, which could even dazzle you.

I just list some mainstream mobile operators. They all have different phone plans that you can check on their websites.

Freshmen do not have to worry about the SIM card, because once you complete the registration, you will get a Comviq prepaid card (a free gift) from the school, so there is no need to worry about which mobile operator to choose. Lucky us!

Comviq is Sweden’s largest and oldest virtual operator. Its prepaid cards are almost household names, and its network is built on Sweden’s two largest operators, Tele2 and Telenor. However, the SIM card you get from the school is a prepaid card, and Comviq’s prepaid card cannot be used directly. You need to log in to Comviq’s official website or app to register and recharge. It is important to note that Comviq’s fixed package requires a personal number to register, so freshmen who have just arrived in Sweden may not be able to immediately apply for the student fixed package, and may need to consider a more expensive non-fixed package.

There are many types of non-fixed packages. For example, the 250 kr standard package includes 1GB surf valid for one year, and calls within Sweden are charged at an average of 0.99 kr per minute; The pure surf package at a price of 55 kr includes 30 days of validity and has 1GB surf; Unlimited surf package is 55 kr, including unlimited internet access within 24 hours.

In addition, Comviq’s packages do not have to be purchased online. Any convenience store in Sweden sells prepaid cards, and you can also recharge or purchase packages in the store.

Once you get the personal number (no need to obtain a physical card, just the number), you can purchase a fixed student package, which can also be linked to a credit card, then monthly payments are automatically deducted. There are several types of student fixed packages, with prices ranging from 95 to 275 kronor per month.

Noted that only above 10G packages include free EU roaming, the service of saving the unused surf every month for the following months, free unlimited calls and text messages. The 95kr 5GB student packages are only available in Sweden, the surf cannot be saved, and there is no EU roaming. You can choose the plan based on your own internet usage. And if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment!
