Hej, hej! 👋

Are you interested in sustainability? Do you want to work in technical projects and help companies make their processes more environmentally friendly?

If your answers to the previous questions were yes, then stay with me, because I have the perfect Master’s for you! 🌱

Sustainability Engineering and Management is a two-year international Master’s programme offered by LiU at Campus Valla (the main campus). It brings together students from different countries and backgrounds who share the same eagerness to learn more about implementing sustainable approaches in industrial settings.

This programme is quite technical and focuses on applied sustainability methods such as carrying out LCAs (Life Cycle Assessments), calculating emissions, and determining carbon footprints. In other words, the spotlight is on how we can effectively improve products, processes, and emissions in any market.

Being part of such a diverse environment has helped them expand their understanding of sustainability and management while broadening their cultural and behavioural perspectives.
They also mentioned how grateful they are for their professors’ efforts. According to them, they received incredible support throughout the programme, and especially during the thesis search. The professors arranged lectures, fairs, and made themselves available throughout the entire application process.

What Your Master’s Can Look Like 🎓

Since the programme is open to people with distinct engineering backgrounds, the first year serves as a broad introduction to management and sustainability concepts. This structure gives students an understanding of three main industrial scopes: energy usage, supply chain, and eco-design, ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

When you begin your second year, you will have more freedom to dive deeper into your preferred electives related to the topics you have been studying.

The final semester is devoted to your thesis. Students are encouraged to collaborate with companies during this phase to gain a better understanding of how their theoretical knowledge applies in real-world situations. Of course, if you prefer to work independently or explore a more academic approach, you are welcome to do so.

Be Prepared for Group Work 🤝

An important aspect of this Master’s is group work. Throughout the programme, you will often find yourself doing case studies and research with different colleagues. Even your thesis project can be done in pairs.

To give you some first-hand insights, I asked a few second-year students to share their experiences in Sustainability Engineering and Management. Jai comes from India with a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering; Frida is Swedish and studied Civil Engineering in Molecular Biotechnology in Uppsala; and Juan Paulo is a Chemical Engineer from the Philippines.

What Do students Think of It? 💬

In this programme, you’ll have lectures during the week and, based on those and your own research, you’ll dive into case studies, analyse real data, and write reports and scientific papers. Deliverables may be submitted online, on paper, or presented in seminars with your teammates.

During our conversation, the students shared that the large amount of group work is both the biggest challenge and the most rewarding part of the programme. Imagine a class of around 20 students, each with a different academic background and cultural perspective. Skill sets vary widely, which can be stressful at times when your colleagues are unfamiliar with certain tools or organization styles. However, this diversity also leads to unique inputs, rich discussions, and strong knowledge-building.

What Can You Do After Graduation? 🌍

Having a degree in such a broad area offers many advantages. By combining your expertise with sustainability and management knowledge, you become a professional with a unique skill set. That is exactly why Frida decided to change universities for her Master’s, merging Molecular Biotechnology with Sustainability makes her one of a kind!
When asked about their plans after graduation, Juan Paulo shared his desire to work in Process Engineering to apply his sustainability knowledge and help make manufacturing more environmentally friendly. Frida hopes to work with Strategic Environmental Management. Both of them are currently involved in improving end-of-life assessment for surveillance and electronic materials during their thesis with Axis.
Jai, on the other hand, has a broader outlook on his future career and hopes to gain more on-site experience during his thesis project with Toyota Material Handling.

As you can see, the future is bright in this field ✨ and Linköping University is here to support you in becoming the best professional you can be. Through a mix of theory, analysis, and hands-on work, you’ll graduate with strong skills in applying sustainable strategies across multiple industries.
In the words of the interviewees: “Sweden is the obvious choice in this area. Here, sustainability is more than a punchline, it’s rooted in the whole society.”
