Why become an international student ambassador as a BioMed student?
Hello!
My name is Sona, and I am studying a BSc in Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine – one of the many international degree programs in LiU. This past year, I had the incredible chance to work as an international student ambassador, which blazed a new trail in student life, Linköping, and building communities as an international student. After some time of reflection, I have separated the main aspects of working while you’re studying and how to make the most out of it!
As the name of the international ambassador suggests, I was working with people from completely different backgrounds, from Poland to India, and finishing with Taiwan to Brazil. This not only makes the exciting teamwork but also helps to develop essential skills, such as cultural awareness, open-mindedness, teambuilding skills, and clear communication. This was harder to see in the beginning, yet it turned out that these international connections came to prove to me that we sometimes share the same feelings.
In this fast-moving world with increasing data and the demand for more complex algorithms, the field of biomedicine, like many others, needs to look for competent minds. Working as an international ambassador helped me develop skills in collaboration and adaptability. These abilities seem to be critical in the future to learn how to work in bigger groups (e.g. in research groups), interact with patients, and create and lead diverse groups.
As many of the new students planning their arrival at LiU, I was also scared, worried, and excited all at a single glance once I decided to come here. As an international ambassador, I started valuing mentorship and helping new students navigate challenges. This also helps to create a more exclusive campus experience where everyone brings their own “colour”.
Lastly, I want to mention that this opportunity allows me to meet with experienced staff members, including coordinators in the international office who are available for help, in case needed. Throughout the year, there are several panel discussions, seminars, and reflection meetings to discuss what has been done and bring in new ideas. These meetings are not just for work but also an enriching experience to try princess cake (Prinsesstårta), Swedish candy combinations (which, believe me, are worth trying lol), share moments of our own culture, and many more. If you are passionate about helping others and you want to have a closer look at student opportunities, mentorship, and meeting bright minds, then I hope to see you as the next LiU ambassador!
For the final time,
