Attention all international students who require residence permits for study – the time to prepare for renewal is now! As many of our permits are set to expire in late August or early September, it’s crucial to start the renewal process early to avoid last-minute stress and complications. As a fellow student navigating the renewal journey myself, I understand the overwhelming nature of the waiting process. But fear not, for I’m here to guide you through the preparations and motivate you to start now.

First and foremost, let’s talk about the academic requirements for renewal. If you’re a master’s student entering your second year of study, you must have accumulated a minimum of 15 credits from courses completed in your first year. However, if you’re progressing from the second year to the third, or beyond, please ensure to check the specific requirements on the Swedish Migration Agency website (click here) [Extend residence permit for higher education – Migrationsverket].

Now, onto the financial aspect. It’s essential to put aside funds that you will show as proof of financial means for living expenses during the renewal process.

This is also an excellent opportunity to ensure that your passport will be valid for the next one-year period for which you are applying. If your passport is due to expire soon, don’t panic – simply visit the embassy of your country for assistance in renewing it.

When it comes to health insurance, rest assured that as long as you are still a fee-paying LiU student who has duly paid fees, you are automatically covered. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check your coverage and ensure that it aligns with your needs.

Now, let’s address the timing of the application. Remember, you are not allowed to apply for renewal more than six months before the expiry date of your current permit. So, mark your calendars and plan to submit your application at the appropriate time.

As for me, I have already started preparing for my permit renewal. I plan to apply in late April or early May to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any last-minute rush. So, my fellow international students, I urge you to join me in starting the preparation process now. Let’s tackle this renewal journey together and ensure that we can continue our studies at LiU without any interruptions.

Remember, the key to a successful renewal is early preparation. Don’t wait until the last minute – start now and stay ahead of the game. I have started preparing for mine, have you?

Yours, Chelsea.
