Congratulations on being admitted to Linköping University! This is an exciting time, but it’s natural to feel a bit overwhelmed with the next steps. Don’t worry, I’m here to guide you through the process of preparing for your journey to Linköping. Here are some essential steps to ensure a smooth transition.

Arriving in Linköping:

First things first, make sure you arrive in Linköping well in advance of the start of classes. Arriving early not only allows you to settle in comfortably but also presents opportunities to connect with fellow students through various welcoming events.

Flying In:

If you’re coming from abroad, flying might be your preferred mode of transportation. Linköping City Airport (LPI) offers convenience with its proximity to the city center. However, keep in mind that flight options from LPI are limited, primarily serving Amsterdam Schiphol. Flights from here can be pricey, especially during peak travel times.

An alternative approach is to fly into Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) or Copenhagen Airport (CPH), both well-connected hubs offering a plethora of direct flights. From these airports, a smooth 2-3 hour train journey will bring you to Linköping. This option often proves more cost-effective and provides greater flexibility in flight choices.

Taking the Train:

For those traveling from Europe, trains offer a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative. Consider the nightly train departing from Berlin or Hamburg, arriving in Linköping the following morning. This option not only provides a comfortable journey but can also be budget-friendly, especially when booked in advance. Plus, you’ll be contributing to sustainability efforts by opting for rail travel.

Before You Go in Linköping:

  • Mark Important Dates: Take note of all important dates related to your program. While accepting your place in the program on the University Admission website is not mandatory, attending the mandatory Roll Call is. Missing this could result in losing your place. Check out the general overview of relevant dates on the university’s website.

  • Housing Hunt: Start looking for accommodation early. Sign up with housing companies like Heimstaden and Studentbostäder. Apply for multiple options to increase your chances and be patient as companies may take time to respond. Ensure you’re dealing with legitimate housing offers.

  • Residence Permit: If you’re a fee-paying student, begin the process of applying for a residence permit as soon as possible. Delays can occur, so getting this sorted early will ensure you arrive in Sweden on time without any major issues.

  • Swedish Personal Number: If you’re staying in Sweden for more than 12 months, consider obtaining a Swedish Personal Number. This makes life in Sweden much easier for administrative purposes. Ensure you have all necessary documents ready as per the requirements of the Swedish Tax Agency.

When You Arrive:

  • University Registration: Upon arrival, head to the Info Center for university registration. It’s a straightforward process requiring your ID. You’ll receive information on creating your student account and obtaining your student card. Register for your classes online after attending the first session of each.

  • Personal Number & ID: If you plan to stay for over a year, obtaining a personal number from Skatterverket (Tax Office) is advisable. The process involves submitting necessary documents and waiting a couple of months for approval. Once you have your personal number, you can proceed to get your Swedish ID.

  • Bank Account: Opening a bank account is crucial for managing finances. While online banks like ICA Banken are convenient, ensure they allow for necessary functionalities like BankID creation. Danske Bank is another option, but be prepared for potential delays and language barriers in paperwork.

Tackling all the paperwork and formal stuff can feel like a maze, but you’ve got this!

Preparing in advance and staying patient can really save the day. And guess what? You’re not alone in this adventure!
