Surströmming, often hailed as the world’s smelliest food, was the center of an adventurous culinary experience I had with friends. Our curiosity piqued, we managed to find the last two cans of this infamous dish at a local grocery store. Luckily, one of our Swedish friends, experienced in the art of Surströmming, volunteered to lead the culinary expedition.

We decided to throw a Surströmming party, inviting a bunch of friends eager to try this unique dish. To complement the Surströmming, our Swedish friend baked homemade bread specially for the occasion. The traditional way to enjoy Surströmming, as we learned, is with bread, butter, onion, potatoes, and sour cream – a combination crafted to balance its intense flavour.

Understanding the notorious reputation of Surströmming’s smell, our friend wisely chose to open the cans outside and submerged in water. This method helped contain the potent aroma, making it noticeable but not overwhelmingly so.

Finally, the moment of truth arrived, and we got our chance to taste Surströmming. The flavour was surprisingly not as bad as I anticipated – quite intense, akin to an old, overly salted smelly cheese. As we ate, the pungent odour became more pronounced, mingling with the strong taste. To ease the sensory overload, we resorted to some high-percentage spirits, humorously dubbing it our ‘disinfectant’.

The thought of opening a can of Surströmming indoors sent shivers down our spines – that would have been a real disaster for the entire corridor! Our experience with Surströmming turned out to be a memorable blend of laughter, daring tastes, and unforgettable smells, making for a truly unique Swedish adventure.
