As an international student at Linköping University, I was eager to experience the unique Swedish Christmas traditions. I was lucky enough to be invited to my Swedish friend’s family Christmas dinner in their country house, which gave me a firsthand glimpse into the heartwarming customs and festivities that characterize this special time of year in Sweden.

Christmas Eve is the main day of celebration in Sweden, and it is typically spent with family and friends. The day begins with a traditional Swedish breakfast of Julbord, a smorgasbord of cured meats, herring, cheeses, bread, and Scandinavian delicacies.

After breakfast, as we arrived to the country house. the dinner was started to be cooked and prepared. most families started to arrive to the country house carrying huge bags of gifts and wearing charismas costumes. . In the evening, the main event of Christmas Eve is the Julbord dinner. This is a feast of traditional Swedish dishes, including Julskinka (Christmas ham), Julkorv (Christmas sausage), Julgröt (Christmas porridge), and Julmust (a fizzy Christmas drink).

The dinner was followed by gift-giving and opening them. I hared once that in Sweden, it is customary for children to put out their shoes on Christmas Eve, hoping that Santa Claus will fill them with presents overnight. Gift-giving is an important part of Swedish Christmas celebrations. Children traditionally receive small gifts from their families on, while adults exchange gifts on Christmas Eve. Gifts are typically wrapped in colorful paper and placed under the Christmas tree.

The Julgran (Christmas tree) is a central feature of Swedish Christmas celebrations. The tree is traditionally decorated with lights, ornaments, and tinsel. Some families also hang stockings on the mantelpiece for Santa Claus to fill with presents for the children.

Swedish Christmas is not just about the traditions and festivities; it is also about creating a warm and festive atmosphere. This is known as Julstämning, which translates to “Christmas spirit.” Julstämning is created through the sharing of food, the exchange of gifts, and the enjoyment of each other’s company.

Attending my friend’s family Christmas dinner was a truly heartwarming experience. I was warmly welcomed by the family and made to feel like one of their own. The food was delicious, the conversation was engaging, and the atmosphere was filled with love and joy.

I learned so much about Swedish Christmas traditions and customs, and I was grateful for the opportunity to experience them first-hand. It was a truly special occasion that will stay with me for many years to come. I encourage you to embrace the opportunity to experience Swedish Christmas traditions. It is a unique and enriching experience that will deepen your understanding of Swedish culture and create lasting memories.
