Hej everyone!

Greetings from the heart of the autumn semester! As we find ourselves in the middle of the examination period, I felt like it was the perfect time to reflect on my journey at Linköping, especially my experience at LiU. I’ll dive into some topics that I hope you find helpful if you’re thinking about coming to LiU, or maybe something you can relate to if you’re already here!

Weather

Sweden’s weather – a topic as diverse as the country itself. After over two months here, I’ve transitioned from a “summer” time to experiencing and embracing the autumn vibes from Sweden. But let me tell you: “summer” and “autumn” definitions can be really different across the globe! Sun, rain, (fierce) wind, and even hail have graced my days (and it’s only October). I’ve already dusted off my winter wardrobe and preparing myself for the imminent cold. Nevertheless, I’m genuinely excited about the upcoming winter and confident that everything will be just fine!

Studies – Master in Applied Ethology and Animal Biology

For those intrigued by the Master’s program I’m enrolled in, let me share my experience so far. I just “finished” the first two courses (Applied Ethology and Stress and Animal Welfare), and I’m currently between exams, but let me tell you, I can honestly say I’m really enjoying it! All the teaching method so far as been pretty good, the professors are approachable and supportive, and I really love that we have so much fieldwork! Besides, this course places a significant emphasis on teamwork; random groups organized by your professors will allow you to broaden your horizons, get to know each other, and maybe make some really good friendships along the way! Also, it feels pretty good to be surrounded by people who share your passion and with so many different perspectives.

Balancing Social Life and Personal space

Now, let’s talk about the social and personal space. I won’t lie, I’m not that much of a party person, although there are numerous parties arranged by University Associations. I’ve been to a couple of parties and some dinners with friends, but I try to make the most of my social life during the day. However, and you’ll know once you hear one of the next podcast episodes (Fika with us), for me “No” it’s a really important word. You really need to know what makes you comfortable or not, and you shouldn’t feel compelled to attend social events if you don’t want to. Still, from my experience you’ll never feel alone: you will probably have people that really enjoy participating in social activities, partying, etc. and you’ll have people that don’t do it that often, so you won’t feel alone with either option!

On the flip side, it’s equally important to acknowledge when you’re spending excessive time alone. Enjoying your personal space is essential, but remember, cultivating a social life is also part of self-care. So basically, I just want you to make sure that you don’t forget to have a balance between these two!

Mental health

Last but not least, one thing that I don’t want you to put on second plan is your mental health. As the days grow colder and shorter, it’s natural to feel increased stress and a sense of loneliness, especially after being away from your family, friends and your hometown for a couple of months. Those emotions are entirely normal. The key is to have a plan on how you intend to cope with these feelings. However, if you feel it is too much, remember that the University offers individual counselling services. These sessions can provide invaluable support in many ways addressing health, well-being, and studies concerns you might have. Just reach out to get more information, taking care of your mental health is an essential part of your overall well-being and academic success!

And these are my thoughts so far about my journey at LiU. Hope you find them helpful and relatable! I really wanted to share my experience with managing finances, but I believe that I need more time to provide you with the best tips and thoughts on budgeting, so stay tuned!

Thanks for reading, see you soon!
