Hej, hej!

Nowadays, we need more than just textbooks and lecture notes to thrive academically and socially. And it’s me saying that – a technically-challenged person 😉 Whether we want it or not, multiple mobile apps can help simplify our student life. It can be from managing finances to obtaining coffee discounts and planning your next trip. In this blog, I’ll share with you eight must-have apps with a focus on discounts which can make your next budget planning a bit easier.

Food

Prices in Sweden are high but no matter what… we all need food. Here are some lifesavers:

Too Good To Go

If you hate food waste and love great deals, Too Good To Go is your go-to app. Actually, the main mission of Too Good To Go is to reduce food waste. When you open the app, it displays nearby restaurants, cafes, and stores with surplus food they’re willing to sell at a discount. You can browse through the options, choose what you want to purchase, and pay directly through the app. Then, simply pick up your meal or items during the designated time. It’s a win-win: you save money, and food waste is minimized.

Below you can see an example content of two bags (~ 100SEK).

Karma

Karma is another app focused on reducing food waste. It also partners with restaurants, cafes, and bakeries to sell surplus food at a discount. Essentially, it’s the same as the previous one. The difference is just that it has more options for various places.

Espresso House

This one is maybe not a must-have. But we’ve all been there… sometimes, coffee becomes your trusted companion or just a last resort 😉 Nonetheless, the Espresso House app is perfect for caffeine enthusiasts. It offers loyalty rewards, exclusive discounts, and the convenience of ordering your favourite drink ahead of time, ensuring that you’re always fuelled up for your study sessions. Or if you want to be like a Swede… ordering beforehand minimises your interactions with others 😉

Travelling

Tickital

Travelling by bike can be sometimes challenging, especially during unpleasant weather or if you have luggage. However, the prices of bus tickets are not so student-friendly. Tickital could be your solution! This app allows you to buy temporary tickets at a reduced price. Those tickets come from other people who, for example, have a long-term ticket and won’t be using it for a few days. Navigation in the app is straightforward. You choose your area or a bus provider (Östgötatrafiken for Linköping and Norrköping) and then you can view available tickets. Just remember to buy it beforehand because it solely depends on the seller to approve your request and send the ticket. Overall, it may take from a few minutes to even half an hour. Also, if you’re the ticket owner, you can lend it as well and save some money on your ticket. Isn’t it a great app? 😀

SJ (Swedish Railways)

Planning trips around Sweden? The SJ app simplifies your travel planning. It allows you to book train tickets, check schedules, and receive real-time updates on your journey. Importantly, while buying tickets there you are able to collect points which you can use later to buy another ticket.

General discounts

How to make your life more affordable overall? These 3 apps provide a multitude of options for you to discover!

ISIC (International Student Identity Card)

The ISIC app is a valuable tool for those of you who plan international travels. It provides access to a range of student discounts worldwide, making your student budget stretch further. Simply flash your ISIC card to enjoy reduced prices on transportation, accommodations, attractions, and much more.

Mecenat

Mecenat is a renowned student discount platform in Sweden. The Mecenat app brings a plethora of discounts directly to your smartphone. Almost all in one place! You can browse through discounts on dining, shopping, travel, IT and more. I’d say, it is an essential tool for students looking to save money.

Studentkortet

Studentkortet is another well-known student discount platform and student card provider in Sweden. It offers a range of discounts and benefits to students, including discounts on dining, shopping, travel, and entertainment. It’s quite similar to Mecanat in the manner of use but sometimes, offers differ between these two apps.

If you found something interesting, go ahead and download these apps to make your student journey more efficient, enjoyable, and most importantly cheaper! 🙂
