If you are a student who just got an unfurnished room for your accommodation in Linköping, you may be wondering what to do the day you arrive. In this post, I bring you some tips and my personal experience so you can prepare yourself before you arrive.

Before arriving in Linköping I knew I wanted an unfurnished room as I wanted to decorate my room by myself as I was going to stay here for two years. But one of my worries was how to furnish my room and where I was going to sleep the day I arrived in my room had nothing.

About a week before arriving in Linköping, I placed an order from Spain with Ikea Sweden for some basic things for my first night, such as a towel, bed, and mattress. I scheduled the order to arrive the same day I arrived and I chose a time slot I knew I was going to be already in my corridor.

It is very important that you indicate your phone number on the order, as most buildings in Ryd do not have a doorbell and will not be able to knock on your door. They called me on the phone and the same day I arrived I set up my bed.

I did indeed need more stuff in my room. I gradually filled my room with second-hand furniture. First of all, I looked for a table on the Facebook market. Secondly, I bought a chair and a bedside table at the LiU secondhand. You can check their opening hours on their Instagram or website. They have a lot of chairs, tables, some furniture, and sofas. You can see on the website what they have and I recommend you sign up for their delivery day. I didn’t and walked from their store to Ryd with the chair I bought (and broke it). You also have the option to rent a cargo bike from them, and it is a good idea if you don´t want to wait for the delivery day.

In Linköping downtown we have Myrona, another second-hand store. There you can also find some furniture like mirrors, carpets or paintings. I like going there very often because they change their products weekly and you never know what you will find next time you go.

My recommendation is to plan in advance what you will need, what your budget is and to look in second-hand stores. You will find everything you need. It took me a week to find everything I needed and wanted in my room so it is good if you come a week in advance to start preparing for your new life here.  Some students stay in hotels until they have fully furnished but if that is not your plan or you want to save some money, ordering from Ikea before you go might be a good idea.

Good luck to everyone who will be moving to Linköping this summer! I hope you are as excited as I was.
