When I first visited in Linköping, I came by car with all of my stuff and luckily also my bike from home. I only stayed for a day before heading back to Germany for some last days there. When I did my final move up north, I took the train. Now when I arrived at the central station there was still the question on how to get Ryd, where I live. I couldn’t quite figure out on how to buy tickets for the bus – to be fair I had a stressful almost 11-hour train trip behind me. So, you don’t have to go through this when you get here, here is a quick guide to public transport in Linköping and Sweden.

Östgötatrafiken

Östgötatrafiken ist he local public transport provider in Linköping but also in all of Östergötland. The easiest way to get tickets is via their app. First you will have to choose for which region you want to buy a ticket: city zone (Linköping, Motala, Norrköping) or all of Östergötland. Here you can choose between different types of tickets such as single- or 24-hour tickets. There is also an option to buy monthly tickets. This might be an option for you during the winter month. Most importantly you can choose the student ticket which gives you a discount. You can pay with a credit card or Swish, once you get that. When you get on the bus you have to present your ticket, which is displayed in the app with an QR code, in front of the machine located at the doors. If you have problems using the app, you can always just hold your bank card to the machine, and it will deduct the price for a single trip. There is no student discount when using this method.

Storstockholms Lokaltrafik – SL

Another public transport system that might be helpful is the Stockholm one. For this you will need another app. The tickets you buy here are valid for both the metro and the busses. You again can get a student discount here. If you want to get on the bus and can’t use the app, you can pay by card the same way as in Linköping. The metro stations however do have ticket machines where you can buy paper tickets. There you also have the student option and can simply pay by card.

SJ

If you want to visit different parts of Sweden for Linköping, you will need the SJ app. This gives you the possibility to buy tickets to travel all over Sweden. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can get quite cheap tickets.

Campusbussen

There is also a Campus bus that travels between Linköping and Norrköping connecting the two Campi, making getting to class quite easy. The bus leaves once an hour and makes several stops including the US Campus. Departures and stops can be found to the LiU website and in the app. You can you this for free with your LiU student card. It’s also great if you want to go on a day trip.

I hope this helps you when you come to Sweden. I still do recommend having a bike here in Linköping as you will most certainly need it and it’s the easiest and cheapest way to get around.

All the best,

Emily
