The end of the year is near and, the beginning of the master’s thesis will follow.

This is why I want to share some tips and guides that I have received to start the last project in my master’s program (SMIO).

First, you should clarify and ask if you should do the thesis individually or in pairs. Maybe both options are available in your program. In my case, the thesis is done in pairs. This is why it is essential to find a person with whom you can work comfortably.

Second, try to know what topics of interest are common with your partner or find interesting people and organizations to contact in your research. In Sweden, it is very common to do the master thesis with a company. If this interests you, look for opportunities at master thesis fairs, at LiU Career Gate, on Glassdoor, LinkedIn or on the career page of the organization of your interest.

Knock on doors and ask. The next opportunity could be just in front of you.

It is better to try to get in contact to explore your topic even further. In my case, through the Linköping’s Science Park I was able to develop my thesis proposal for this organization.

Thirdly, focus your research on topics that have not yet been fully explored, but have a clear goal and scope because the time to complete the thesis is more or less 4 months.

In case of doubt, ask the director or tutor of your program. In my case, I have received a list of guides and tips to be able to outline my thesis proposal in January.

Lastly, follow all the instructions step by step with time and prepare to be flexible and readapt your proposal according to the feedback from your thesis advisor. Do not fall in love with your first ideas, this is an iterative investigation where your point of view can constantly change.

This is all for now, later I will be able to share details of this process! See ya!

Wishing you all the best,

Hela.
