Arriving in a new country, however exciting, can feel like being dropped into the middle of a story without knowing the plot. Where do you go? Who do you talk to? How do you find people who understand what you’re going through? As an international student at Linköping University, I’ve asked all these questions, and thankfully, I found a place that felt like home from day one: the International Students Association (ISA).

I joined ISA shortly after I arrived in Linköping, still wide-eyed, overwhelmed, and trying to figure out how to pronounce “Östgötatrafiken.” And let me tell you, it was one of the best decisions I made. I didn’t just find a student group, I found a safe space, a little corner of warmth in a new world. ISA became my introduction to Swedish student life, my emotional anchor, and most importantly, the beginning of so many friendships that continue to define my time at LiU.

ISA’s mission is simple but powerful: to make sure no international student feels lost, alone, or left out. They host regular events, social activities, trips and cultural celebrations that help students meet, make friends, and settle in. Think game nights, language exchanges, international dinners, movie nights, campus tours, and themed parties and yes, fika sessions too! You’ll be surprised how quickly the awkwardness melts away when you’re laughing over a bowl of popcorn or trying food from ten different countries at one table.

What I love about ISA is how diverse, vibrant, and welcoming it is. You don’t need to know anyone, or even know what you’re looking for just show up. ISA welcomes you exactly as you are, whether you want to socialize every weekend or simply attend a few events when you need a familiar face in the crowd. It is, quite literally, a home away from home.

If you’re a new student arriving in August and don’t know where to start, don’t panic. You’re not alone. And the good news is, ISA is usually stationed right next to the International Office on reporting days, ready to greet you with a warm smile and help you find your way. If you’re confused, lost, or just tired from your journey, look for any ISA member. We’re more than happy to assist you with settling in, answering your questions, or even helping you find your keys and your courage on that first day.

And for those wondering how to stay connected, most of ISA’s events and updates are posted on their Instagram page @isa_linkoping. It’s the best way to know what’s happening, from casual hangouts to big welcome parties. Following the page is like getting a backstage pass to student life at LiU, where every post reminds you that there’s something to look forward to.

ISA isn’t just for new students either. Many continuing students only discover it months later and often say, “I wish I’d known about this earlier!” It’s never too late to join. Whether you’re looking for friendship, fun, or just a space where you feel seen and heard, ISA is there.

For me, ISA gave me more than just fun nights and shared meals, it gave me solace. In moments when the cultural shift felt overwhelming or when homesickness snuck in uninvited, I found comfort in this community. It was in the conversations over tea, the shared jokes from different cultures, and the gentle reminder that even though we come from all over the world, we’re all trying to find our way here, together.

So, to every new international student out there: you don’t have to figure it out alone. Come say hi. Join an event. Ask for help. Laugh a little. You’ll be surprised how quickly Linköping starts to feel like home. You can reach ISA through their Instagram page @isa_linkoping, and during arrival days, look out for their friendly faces near the International Office. We’re here, and we’re waiting to welcome you.

Because no matter where you’re from, you belong here.

Yours, Chelsea.
