How does having an international classroom affect students at LiU?
Hello everyone,
Today, I will be talking about having an international classroom in Sweden. Linköping University is committed to creating diverse learning environments that provide equal opportunities for personal and community development. This becomes practical in my classroom studying BSc Experimental Biomedicine, where Swedish and international students from all over the world unite to transform education. But how exactly does this global setting reflect in students’ personal, academic, and social development?
Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity
Perhaps one of the most immediate benefits is exposure to different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Learning alongside peers from other countries encourages students to see the world through a broader lens. Students become more empathetic, open-minded, and respectful of differences. I often see myself learning from others’ cuisine, traditions, and mentality, which significantly broadens my understanding of world cultures.
Enhanced Communication Skills
Global classrooms often adopt English or another shared language, pushing students to communicate clearly, listen actively, and adjust the pace and intonation of their speech to different levels of language understanding. This real-world language practice immensely enhances communication skills.
Collaborative Problem Solving Across Borders
While working in a multicultural team, students learn to bring unique ideas and problem-solving styles. International group projects teach patience and innovative thinking skills critical for future careers in a global job market. This also significantly improves critical thinking skills, allowing the development of a highly competent skillset for future endeavors
Exchange programs
Studying a full-time degree is a challenging subject, and the University supports students who want to “Go International” to complete courses or projects outside of LiU. This provides a massive trampoline step for those who want to pursue an international career after their studies in Sweden.
Lastly, I want to mention that being amongst international communities made me realize that the sky is the limit and opportunities are endless. Students often carry the impact of international classrooms far beyond graduation, as this story becomes part of who they are and will become. With all this said, I wish you the best of luck and hope to see you soon at LiU!!
Best,
Sona H. from Armenia
