Why Study Biomedicine?
Hi, and welcome back to another blog day!
First off, I would like to congratulate all newly admitted students, and I wish to meet many of you soon here at LiU!
I have noticed that many people are unfamiliar with the degree in biomedicine and what career opportunities it offers. Today, I want to give more details on the career paths and how to make the most of your studies in biomedicine.
Previously, I have attended several job fairs, which gave me a better understanding of this topic. These are my own findings, and they will certainly diverge depending on what you are looking for and your personal interests. LiU provides the opportunity to meet company representatives and recruiters via fairs, lectures, and student gatherings, which gives a platform to look for opportunities.
Firstly, to understand what a biomedicine degree is about, it is a rapidly growing field focusing on human health and disease. Biomedicine is a branch of medical science that applies biological and physiological principles to clinical practice. When studying the program, students learn to analyze human tissue samples, blood, and body fluids to be able to diagnose and treat a disease or a condition. So, reading this, you will wonder what having a biomedicine degree gives you? Here are some options:
- Forensic scientists analyze and collect relevant evidence and apply biomedical techniques to solve crime cases. This includes many analytical techniques and would require critical thinking and attention to detail.
- Hospitals and clinics: Biomedical graduates can bring valuable clinical input into hospitals and clinics, working alongside the doctors to diagnose and manage health problems. Biomedicine expertise can support the practical treatment of diseases, including cancer and other chronic conditions. Biomedical graduates can also bring valuable implementation in clinical trials, ensuring that treatments are safe and promote well-being.
- Public health and safety: Graduating with a biomedical degree can provide a pathway to work in the public health sector to verify and implement health packages, such as vaccinations, child care, and available treatment options for various diseases for the public. This field would also require having a solid understanding of safety and major risks to help control health hazards and safeguard communities.
- Medical research and development: This field offers a wide range of opportunities to explore; it enables you to investigate the causes and progression of diseases. Researchers play a key role in discovering new interventions to offer new ways to enhance public health while understanding disease pathology. However, many of the time, jobs in this field will require further training, such as a master’s degree or a PhD.
- Genetic counseling: As a genetic counsellor, you will guide patients through complex genetic information to analyze health risks and options. In this path, scientific knowledge can help to solve major health–related issues.
- Medical journalism: Yet another growing industry is medical journalism, where one aims to address medicine in easy-to-grasp terminology to make it accessible for the public. This way, you will create content for publishing companies or media outlets to convey the concepts of scientific research articles and educate the public.
- Industry & Entrepreneurship: With increasing industrial jobs, there is a high demand for biomedical and pharmaceutical science graduates to work on the development of new products or improving existing ones. Many biomedical start-ups are growing to meet the health sector’s challenges to develop modern solutions.
If any of these sounds interesting or you see yourself working in any of the fields, you have found the right program to set your hard work into. Remember that your diploma title does not guarantee your job or salary, but your passion and discipline do. With all this said, I wish you the best of luck!
