Visiting Another City in Sweden — Göteborg!
Hejsan!
Are you thinking about visiting another city during your stay in Sweden? Then stay tuned in as I’m gonna share with you my adventure there 🤓
Göteborg is the second largest city in Sweden, and it’s also the biggest city on the west coast of the country (PS, Linköping ranks fifth). It’s renowned for its car industry, and that people have a different way of pronouncing the beloved Swedish chocolate sweet “KEX”.
So, let’s talk about my first impression of the city. It’s a city where a river and bridges are visible right away if you take a stroll around the city center. At the first glance, it might not appear to be very special, but there are actually lots of hidden gems in Göteborg! I assure you that both nature lovers and those who enjoy busy city vibes can find something here 🌟
The city
Within 30 minutes of walk from the central station lies an area called Haga. It is an area of traditional wooden buildings, which give its unique atmosphere. When I visited there, the city was covered with snow and made it feel like walking into a fairy tale setting! There are quite a few cafes in Haga and if you’re so inclined, why not dropping by any of them for a classical Swedish fika ☕ My friend and I stopped for a little snack time in the afternoon, and it was absolutely amazing!
In the same area, another attraction that’s worth visiting is Skansen Kronan. It is a historical landmark, and it’s situated on a hill. Hiking to the top of the hill gives you a bird eye’s view of the city, and it’s in particular stunning when visiting during the night!
The archipelagoes
As for those who are looking for something extraordinary, I recommend hopping onto one of the ferries and travel to the archipelagoes on the coastline of Göteborg. There are several of them that one can go to and it’s even possible to walk between some of the islands on a bridge! Winter is probably not the best season to visit these islands as it’s usually very cold and windy. However, I believe the scenery is equally astonishing in all seasons. As the old proverb goes, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes! Be prepared for the weather conditions and you’re good to go regardless of the seasons 😉 (I admit that my biggest mistake is wearing the wrong type of clothes that are neither waterproof nor windcheaters)
Overall, I like Göteborg for its lovely and cozy vibes. One can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city, as well as finding tranquility in the abundance of nature.
That’s it for today, I wish you a lovely start of the semester and see you next time!
Traffic Information
Many of the destinations are easily approachable by foot, and if you prefer to take the public transport, tickets for public transportation (Including buses, trams and ferries. Note, ferry line 286 is free. For the latest information, check the website of Västtrafik.) can be bought on the local traffic app Västtrafik.
