That is one of the most common questions students have, which I totally understand. Sweden is not known for being a budget-friendly place and coming here with no clue on how to support yourself might not be the best tactic. That’s why we will talk about scholarships!

Let’s start with some good news, if you are from a country in the European Union or Switzerland, you don’t have to pay any tuition fees. That’s right, you can study in Sweden for free! However, if like me you don’t possess a European passport, there are some pretty good opportunities too.

LIU SCHOLARSHIP

Linkoping University offers scholarships with up to 50% reduction on the tuition fees for the entire duration of the program. To participate in this process, you must be an international student required to pay tuition fees in any master’s program. One super important thing is that you have to be accepted in a LiU course that is ranked as the first one on your application list. If you are admitted to your second, third, or fourth option, you are not eligible, unfortunately.

Friendly tip: if you do not get it on your first try, you can also reapply for the second year of your program.

SISGP – Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals

That is my sweetheart! SISGP is what allowed me to be here, in Sweden. If you don’t know it yet, let me introduce you to this amazing fully-funded scholarship that is offered every year by the Swedish Institute to professionals from more than 30 nationalities. SISGP covers your tuition fees, provides health insurance, a monthly stipend, and a great network with its awardees.

To be eligible for it you must be a citizen of one of the countries listed on their website, have at least 3,000 hours of work experience, and wish to contribute to creating a more sustainable world according to the UN’s goals.

Again, if you want more information, you can check their website: SI Scholarship for Global Professionals. It is worth noting that this scholarship is highly competitive, this year only 3% of applicants were admitted. It also has many details and bureaucracy that need to be fully accomplished, so take some time to read it.

That’s me at the SISGP kick-off in Stockholm. It was super fun and I met amazing people from several countries. I’m looking forward to the next one!

In both cases, read the instructions carefully, pay attention to details and deadlines, and double-check your documents before sending! It has been amazing to live and study here. Application for uni and scholarships are stressful, I won’t lie. But, honestly, it is all worth it. Good luck 🍀.
