A Comprehensive Guide to Application for Studying in Sweden
Hejsan!
You might be thinking about studying at LiU/ in Sweden after reading all the fantastic posts written by my colleagues about their experiences of studying here (and if you haven’t, I highly recommend reading them 🤓 You can find all of them in the student blog of LiU).
So what comes next? Follow up if you are currently working on the application or you would like to start but feel a little bit helpless🌟!
How the System works
Unlike many other countries where you submit your application respectively to the universities of your choice, in Sweden, students apply to higher education through ADMISSIONS.SE (click on the text to access the website). You can look for courses and programmes at Swedish universities and they have a list of all the important dates & deadlines regarding your application. Add them to your calendar so you won’t miss any! Besides, make sure to read the instructions carefully, and be aware that different conditions apply depending on your citizenship.
Start Your Application
For bachelor’s, you are allowed to choose as many as 8 courses/ programmes, while for master’s you can choose up to 4 master’s programmes. Aside from searching for programmes on ADMISSIONS.SE, don’t forget to have a look at the university’s website to know more about the entry requirements and contact its admission office if you have any questions.
Once you have decided which programmes to apply for, you rank your selections. It is really important to rank them in a way that aligns with your preferences because you will only be offered ONE place at a time (slightly different rules apply to bachelor’s, refer to ADMISSIONS.SE for details).
After having all your documents ready, all you need to do is to upload them to the system! Then you are pretty much done with the application procedure 🎉
Before You Get the Result
You might want to do something that’s gonna make your journey in Sweden smoother:
- Look for grants/ scholarships: There are quite a few scholarships provided by Swedish government and the university. For the ones provided by university, many of them ask you to rank the university to which you apply as your first choice to be eligible and LiU is one of them.
- Familiarize yourself with the local housing situation: It’s always better to take a look at how you can find a place to stay during your study! Some might guarantee international students accommodation but many of them do not.
- Check what documents are required to apply for residence permit if you come from outside EU/ EEA: Getting a residence permit can be a lengthy process. Check country specific rules to be better prepared.
- Keep your mind open and brace yourself for any challenge: Studying far away from home can sometimes be hard. On the other hand, it’s a perfect chance for personal development as there will certainly be surprises (both good and bad)!
That’s it for today. Good luck with your application😁
