If you’re wondering what it’s really like to study at Linköping University (LiU) and whether it could be the place for you, let me give you an inside look—I’m genuinely excited to share this with you! When I first started, I wrote an article called “My First Impression on the Aeronautical Engineering Masters Programme,” sharing my experiences from those first three exhilarating months. But now, with even more time under my belt, I have an even bigger perspective, packed with exciting experiences and insights! As an international student in Aeronautical Engineering, I’m living a dream I didn’t even know I had, and I truly believe that anyone considering engineering (or any field, honestly) would thrive in this environment. Here’s a glimpse into why I think Linköping University might just be where you belong.

Moving to a new country is both thrilling and a bit overwhelming. I was definitely nervous, especially coming from a minority group and wondering if I’d find a sense of belonging in a place so far from home. But Linköping University has this incredible international student community that made it so easy to settle in and feel included. The friendships and connections I’ve built here feel like a second family, and the university truly fosters this sense of community with zero tolerance for discrimination. Seriously, they’re not kidding around! The student associations here stand by this principle, and it shows in every interaction. Some of my best friends are from Croatia, Egypt, China, Spain, Portugal… you name it! And of course Sweden. I’ve had a global experience just by walking across campus. I never imagined I’d be swapping recipes with a friend from Spain one day and then learning some Mandarin with friends from China the next! It’s been hilarious and heart-warming, and I can honestly say I feel like I have “homes” all over the world now.

And if you’re lucky enough to snag a student part-time job with the university, like I did, brace yourself for an unforgettable experience. The staff are incredibly welcoming and supportive; it’s like they’re on a mission to make sure you’re having as much fun as you are learning. I’ve had the time of my life helping here, getting involved with events, meeting new students, and sharing laughs.

One thing that really sets LiU apart is its hands-on approach. This isn’t your typical classroom experience with hours of lectures and only a final exam at the end. At LiU, you’re constantly involved in projects that make learning come alive. Just recently, I had the chance to build a Remote Control aircraft as part of my coursework! I’ll be sharing some pictures soon (you’ll see the excitement on my face!), and believe me, seeing something you created take form like that is beyond satisfying. It’s engineering in action. The projects and coursework here are designed to challenge you, encourage creativity, and push you to solve real-world problems. LiU’s programs teach you to think critically, take initiative, and collaborate with your peers—skills that make you feel ready to take on just about anything.

Also, something I absolutely love about studying here is the Swedish way of balancing work and life—it’s practically an art form! LiU totally gets that life isn’t just about hitting the books. They make sure there’s plenty of room for unwinding and having fun, too. From cozy bonfires by the lake to scenic hikes through the gorgeous Swedish countryside, there’s always something to recharge my batteries. I mean, where else can you go from a deep-dive study session straight to exploring lakes and forests with friends? And the best part? When I dive back into studying, I’m refreshed and laser-focused, thanks to this built-in balance. It’s like Sweden’s magic formula for living your best life—learning, adventuring, and just soaking up every moment.

LiU’s approach to education is a breath of fresh air—it’s open, interactive, and honestly, a lot more fun than I ever imagined university could be. Take the “Academic Quarter” for example: every 45 minutes of study is followed by a 15-minute break to recharge. It’s like they know we need that mental snack to stay sharp! And classes? They’re more like lively conversations than lectures. Professors actually want us to jump in with questions, share ideas, and debate concepts. The whole vibe is all about learning together, like a team tackling a mission, not just a bunch of students sitting in rows. I’ve never felt like a passive listener here; instead, I’m fully in the action, engaged, and invested in every lesson.

Another thing I absolutely loveeeee about LiU (and Sweden in general) is how seriously recycling is taken here. There are recycling spots everywhere on campus, and it’s such a nice reminder of Sweden’s dedication to sustainability. And get this~did you know you can even trade empty cans and bottles for money? Yes, actual money! There’s a deposit system where you return cans at any recycling station, and in exchange, you get a small refund for each item. It’s a small but brilliant incentive that makes recycling fun and rewarding. Honestly, it’s the little things like this that make living here feel so special.

Outside of class, Sweden itself has been a revelation. Linköping, the city where LiU is located, is the perfect blend of natural beauty and modern innovation. From charming historical sites to lush parks and trails, there’s so much to explore. And Sweden’s commitment to sustainability is inspiring; living here, you feel connected to something bigger. I’m always discovering new places to visit and activities to try~it’s never boring!

Studying at Linköping University has been nothing short of life-changing. It’s an experience packed with learning, friendships, and growth that I wouldn’t trade for anything. If you’re looking for a place that combines hands-on learning, a supportive community, and an incredible balance of work and life, then maybe—just maybe—LiU is where you belong.

Yours, Chelsea.
