Hey there 👋🏻

My name is Natalia, but you can call me Nati. I’m a first-year student in the Design Master program, and I’m thrilled to share my experiences in Sweden with you guys!

I came from Brazil, a country where the sun shines brightly, maybe 90% of the year. I knew beforehand that I’d face many challenges when moving to Sweden. However, I was not prepared to have so many beautiful scenarios to help me face the weather challenges.

Not only the movie-like views are inspiring, but the traditional Swedish autumn activities are super fun 🤩.

To inspire you, here are some nice fall practices to schedule with your friends:

Go hiking 🥾

Linköping has many hiking trails within the city and in the surrounding area. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time doing it or if you are a pro. I’m pretty sure you’ll find a track that suits you.

Vallaskogen is right next to the Uni and offers you several options of well-signalized paths. A little tip: you can start your hike at LiU and finish it in Gamla Linköping with some Fika (you deserve it after your exercise in the woods).

Talking about rewarding ourselves, a Swedish activity that I became a super fan of is apple picking 🍎.

Invite your friends for an “applely” afternoon, and you’ll not regret it! There are apple trees all around the city – including campus. If it’s a public space, you are safe to get some fruits for you. If you see giant bags in front of people’s houses full of apples, you are also allowed to take some. Having an apple tree in your yard can be both a blessing and trouble, so sometimes people need help to consume them.

Ok, now you have more apples than it’s possible to eat. You should be wondering what’s the next step… Well, make sweets, of course 🤤.

There are many easy recipes online, and calling your friends (or even your mom) to ask for help is always an option, too. I joined an adventure making apple sauce with some friends. I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical of our culinary abilities, but things turned out way better than expected! Our sauce was delicious, and I’m eager to do some more.

Combining our options, you can both go into the woods and get food. Yep, I’m talking about mushroom hunting (trust me, it’s hunt, not pick), and fall is the perfect time to go after them. You are likely to get a few in shadowy, moist areas, like under trees in the forests.

This month, I went on a hike with Växteriet and Vild – two of the many LiU student associations – to pick mushrooms. Even though I don’t like to eat them, the little expedition was very fun (they even made surviving-in-the-forest fika for us), and I donated all my findings to my friends, who loved the gift.

As we get to the end of this post, some might be asking themselves: “Isn’t there anything to do that doesn’t involve nature, woods, and bugs?”

FOR SURE THERE IS MY LITTLE GRASSHOPER!

Linköping is a vibrant city with many activities to offer. If you want an agitated night, LiU’s student associations have many different parties all year long. You can check them out and get your tickets on the Orbi app.

If you prefer some calmer activities, there are often open-air fairs downtown. You can find music festivals, international food events, and many others 🥳.

I hope that with these tips, you will have a full agenda until winter comes. If you think that I forgot to mention something or want to recommend some activities, just leave a comment. I’ll be glad to read them!

See ya,

//Nati, Design
