Dear Reader,

I finally made it to the other side! But, as I begin writing this final blog post for Linköping University, I find myself experiencing a whirlwind of emotions. The joy and pride from successfully defending my thesis just a few days ago are interwoven with the deep sadness of saying goodbye to this chapter of my life. It’s hard to believe that five years have passed since I first set foot on this campus as a wide-eyed international student, eager to start a new adventure in Biomedicine. Now, on the cusp of graduation, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey that has shaped me into the person I am today. This blog is not just a farewell; it’s a celebration of the experiences, challenges, and growth that I have encountered during my time here.

The Beginning of a New Adventure

Coming to Linköping University from Poland (although I moved here from the UK) was both exhilarating and daunting. The decision to pursue a Bachelor’s in Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine was driven by my passion for science and a desire to explore new horizons. However, the reality of leaving my home country, family, and friends behind to start anew in a foreign land was a significant leap of faith. The initial days were filled with the fear of meeting new people, exploring the campus, and adjusting to a different academic environment (it is sooooo different from Poland – at least based on what I hear from my friends). The warmth and friendliness of the Linköping community made the transition smoother.

Academic Challenges and Triumphs

There are many reasons why I remained at LiU for my master’s which I discussed in an earlier blog and I definitely do not regret this choice. The academic journey at Linköping University was both rigorous and rewarding. I remember the countless hours spent in the lab, the late-night study sessions, and the intense exam preparations. There were moments of doubt and frustration, but each challenge was a stepping stone to growth. One of the most valuable aspects of my education here was the emphasis on research and hands-on learning. The opportunity to work on real-world projects equipped me with a strong foundation for my future career.

Personal Growth and Self-Discovery

Beyond academics, my time at Linköping University has been a journey of personal growth and self-discovery. Living independently in a foreign country taught me resilience and adaptability. Being part of the diverse and multicultural community at Linköping exposed me to different perspectives and cultures. The friendships I formed with fellow students from around the world enriched my experience and broadened my horizons. We shared our traditions, celebrated our festivals, and supported each other through the highs and lows of student life.

The Impact of Student Associations

One of the most transformative aspects of my university experience was my involvement in student associations. Joining ISA, FR Ryd and iGEM was a decision that profoundly impacted my personal and professional development. Being part of these associations taught me the value of teamwork and leadership. The experience of working with diverse teams, managing projects, and overcoming challenges was incredibly rewarding. Serving as a leader in some of these associations was a particularly enriching experience. I learned to inspire and motivate others, to listen and understand different viewpoints, and to make decisions that benefited the collective. These experiences have been instrumental in shaping my character and preparing me for the future.

Looking Forward to the Future

As I approach the end of this chapter, I find myself on an emotional rollercoaster. There is a sense of accomplishment and pride in having successfully completed my studies and grown so much over the past five years. At the same time, there is a palpable sadness in leaving behind a place that has become my second home. The campus that once seemed vast and unfamiliar is now filled with memories. The friends who were once strangers are now like family, and the faculty members have become mentors. While there is sadness in saying goodbye, there is also excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. Completing my master’s with my thesis at Karolinska Institutet has opened up a world of opportunities with my next step being a PhD in developmental neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet. The skills, knowledge, and experiences I have gained at Linköping University have prepared me well for the next phase of my journey. Linköping University has been more than an academic institution; it has been a place of growth, discovery, and transformation. The experiences and lessons I’ve gained here will stay with me for a lifetime. As I move on to the next chapter, I carry with me the spirit of Linköping, the friendships I’ve forged, and the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired.

Many beautiful sunrises…

…and sunsets.

To the current and future international students: Embrace every moment, take advantage of every opportunity, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Your time here will be what you make of it. If you’re still questioning coming here, you can be certain that Linköping University is the place that will challenge and positively transform you.

As I conclude this final blog post, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of my journey at Linköping University. It has been a crazy, fun, exciting, challenging, frustrating, awe-inspiring and truly amazing journey. I have met so many fantastic people throughout the years so, to all of you, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Goodbye..?
Oh no, please. Can’t we go back to page one and do it all over again?
