My dear readers,

Swedish summers are a magical time – long days, endless sunshine, and plenty of outdoor fun. Whether you’re a local student or studying abroad, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy during the warm months. From beach days to barbecues, here are some top summer ideas that will keep you busy, active, and soaking up the Swedish sunshine!

1. Grilling with Friends

Nothing says Swedish summer like a good grill. Gather some friends, head to a park, and fire up a grill for a laid-back afternoon. From sausages and veggie skewers to halloumi and fresh fish, you’ll find endless grilling options. It’s a great way to socialize, enjoy nature, and have an affordable meal outdoors.

2. Beach Days

The coasts and lakes in Swedenoffer amazing spots to swim, relax, and sunbathe. Pack a picnic, bring a towel, and enjoy the cool, refreshing waters. Whether you’re by the sea or next to a serene lake, there’s no shortage of places to take a dip! Varamobaden beach in Motala is a perfect place to beach if you live in Linköping, just a short local train ride away 😉

3. Playing Kubb

Kubb is a popular Swedish lawn game that’s easy to learn and fun for groups. Played on grass, the goal is to knock over wooden blocks by throwing batons. It’s a perfect game to bring along to the beach or park and adds a bit of friendly competition to your summer gatherings, while immersing in the Swedish tradition.

4. Strawberry Picking

Swedish strawberries are a summer delicacy, and many farms allow you to pick your own. It’s a great way to spend a sunny day, and you get to take home the freshest strawberries for making desserts, snacking, or sharing with friends. Look for local “självplock” (self-picking) farms nearby.

5. Croquet Games

For a bit of classic outdoor fun, croquet is the perfect choice. Set up a croquet course in a park or backyard and challenge your friends. It’s a laid-back activity that’s both social and strategic, making it ideal for lazy summer afternoons.

6. Water Parks and Adventure Pools

If you want to amp up the fun, head to a water park. Many cities and towns have adventure pools or water parks with slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools. It’s a perfect activity for those really hot days when you need to cool off while having some fun with friends.

7. Camping and Hiking

Sweden’s “Allemansrätten” (right of public access) allows you to camp almost anywhere in nature. Grab a tent, some food, and head into the wild for an overnight camping adventure. If camping isn’t your style, a day hike through Sweden’s beautiful forests, lakes, and national parks is just as rewarding. In Linköping, Rydskogen, Vallaskogen and Tinnerö Naturreservat are all beautiful hike destinations!

8. Café Hopping

Swedish summer isn’t all about outdoor sports – fika (coffee and snack break) culture is a must! Spend a day café-hopping in a quaint town or bustling city, enjoying cozy spots with outdoor seating, a cup of coffee, and maybe a cinnamon bun or two. In Linköping, I recommend Babettes, Simons, Waynes, Espresso House, etc! Babettes is my go to, nothing beats them 😀

9. Cycling Around Town

Summer is the perfect time to explore Linköping and just Sweden in general by bike. Whether you’re in a big city like Stockholm or in a smaller town like Linköping or Norrköping, biking is a great way to get around and explore. Plus, it’s an eco-friendly, budget-friendly, and active way to spend the day.

10. Outdoor Festivals and Events

Sweden’s summer is filled with festivals, from music to food to cultural celebrations. Keep an eye on local events calendars for street festivals, outdoor concerts, or food markets. Many of these events are free or low-cost and are great places to meet people, listen to live music, or try new foods.

Till next time,

Shiv <3
