Hello guys!

As you know, I’m almost done with my master’s degree here at LiU, and next week I’ll be defending my thesis! And I know that “defending a thesis” might not have sense for international students, so I’m here to explain what it means!

When your thesis is finished, you will have to present it at the end of may in front of your classmates and professors. You will have 20 minutes to present your work, and it’s not that easy to summarise five months of work in only 20 minutes! So after that, your opponent will ask you questions (will “oppose” you). Every author will be opposed by a classmate and will, in turn, oppose someone else.

Don’t be afraid though! These questions are should not put you in a though spot. Though the opponent will have the role of a “critic”, the questions should be tailored to help you talk about parts of your thesis that were not in your presentation. And, for us at least, sharing the questions before hand is encouraged! So you won’t be put on the spot with a question you need to think about a little bit longer.

Lastly, there will be 10 minutes for your examiner to ask questions (you will not have these before hand since they will not be prepared before of course), and then there will be time for the audience to ask questions!

I know that it might seem like a lot, but it will all be fine (I hope at least, but I will let you know with certainty next time 😉 )

Are you ready to be opposed?

-V
