Hello all!

I have been studying for 4.5 years at LiU and when the time to search for my master’s thesis came, I decided it was time to move out of my comfort zone and do it someplace else. Due to rather practical reasons, I wanted to remain in Sweden.

There are a few reasons why I chose the place where I am right now but the main point of my today’s blog is actually something different. With this blog, I want to highlight that even though you study at LiU, you are not restricted to this city or university for your master’s thesis. I think LiU has a great research environment for example, in electronics, materials, biomedical engineering or medical areas. However, if you feel like the programme particularly interests you here, in Linköping but you would like to pursue your master’s thesis in a specific company located someplace else then, it is still a possibility for you! For instance, in Poland, it isn’t common to do your thesis outside of the university thus, I wanted to highlight that here, in Sweden, it is different 🙂

Being in Stockholm opens doors to a vast network of academic professionals and industry leaders, offering valuable networking opportunities. As Stockholm is home to several universities, Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Karolinska Institute, it creates amazing opportunities to attend seminars and conferences and build relationships with diverse groups of people.

I decided to do my thesis at Karolinska Institute which is a leading medical university. Despite these two universities (LiU and KI) being in the same country, I feel that the difference between the research environment is immense. There is no better or worse – they are just different and depending on your personality you may thrive more in one or the other. Nonetheless, this transition to Stockholm is definitely a unique experience.

Beyond the academia, Stockholm offers vibrant social and cultural life as well. Now, visiting beautiful islands or museums doesn’t require a day-long visit with a 2-hour train journey. Instead, I can just use the metro or commuter trains and reach the city centre within 20 minutes. Interestingly, together with other students, we have a nice “tradition” of exploring the city’s bakeries. So far, we’ve been to a few already and none of them disappointed us! If you’re interested in the sweet side of Stockholm, feel free to try out Fabrique Stenungsbageri, Krümel, Vete-Katten, Tössebageriet or Bakery&Spice.

However, as with every change of living place, Stockholm also comes with its share of challenges. Adapting to a new academic environment in itself can be challenging but additionally, Stockholm is louder, more crowded and more pricey than Linköping. So, if you think of doing your thesis here, consider these aspects as well 😉

Lastly, if you plan on doing your thesis outside of LiU, start planning early. Many researchers at LiU have collaborators all over Sweden and the world so don’t hesitate to reach out to your supervisors for support and guidance. Also, all institutions offer a bunch of career fairs open to the public – take advantage of it.

No matter where you’re planning on doing your thesis, you must start searching for options early. You don’t always need to apply but even reading about some research or similar even a year before your thesis can help you decrease some headaches closer to the application time. Good luck with your thesis and project search!
