Welcome in 2024!

Since the first round of application period is closing today, we are all eagerly waiting for the results (or supporting documentation). Meanwhile, you should start thinking about the accommodation as finding one in Sweden can be very tricky, or tedious sometimes. No matter what, you need someplace to sleep so this step is inevitable and the sooner you start (and I mean months in advance), the more likely it is that you will have a chance for a room 🙂

Types of accommodation

Let’s start with the different types of accommodations that are available in Linköping. We have corridor rooms, shared student apartments, shared flats and studio apartments. They all vary in rent but based on the average prices, they are listed from the most affordable to the most expensive option. Any of these options can come in a furnished or unfurnished state.

A corridor room is a separate room with its own toilet and shower. It roughly accounts for 20 square meters. However, the kitchen and living area are shared among mostly 8 people whom you don’t know. Student apartments have 2 to up to 5 rooms with one bathroom shared. So, you share it with fewer people and possibly, you can rent it with friends. Studio apartment comprises of a bedroom, a small kitchen (sometimes without a separating wall from the bedroom) and a bathroom. A furnished room comes with a bed, study table, chair and a bookshelf but it is a bit more expensive. As these are all student housings, they are located in so-called student areas for example, Ryd, Flamman, T1, and Valla so you will live mostly around students and close to campus.

Shared flats are rented out by private people so there is a huge variety in what is offered and the conditions you will live in. You don’t need queue points for them so it might be easier to get it. I personally got the shared flat and I lived there for 4.5 years as it was exceptionally good terms of the contract, location and the price. However, just this weekend, I moved to Stockholm so sadly, I had to leave my flat… In my case, I shared it with 2/3 people. We had a spacious kitchen, two bathrooms and a balcony. We did live with the landlord but he was an extremely nice and chilled person.

How to get accommodation?

Student accommodation
  • Sign up on the housing company websites.
    1. Studentbostäder
    2. Heimstaden
    3. Colonia
    4. StudentBo (Norrköping) (they guarantee accommodation to those who are admitted to a programme at campus Norrköping)
  • Registration on these websites is free of charge and straightforward. If they require a personal number, you can change it to the “non-Swedish citizen” option and use your birthday instead.
  • After you sign up, you get 1 point for each day. The more points you have, the more likely you will get accommodation without a hassle so DO register early.
  • When vacant rooms will be listed on their website, and then, you can show interest in those properties (max 5 at a time). There is no perfect time to apply but many students leave around June so rooms will most likely be listed then.
  • After several days, these accommodations are offered to the one who has shown interest and has the highest points among all.
  • Although it may seem daunting, some people with hundreds of points will apply for a place so if it is a corridor room, for example, I would suggest still applying even though the highest bidder has more points than you.
  • If the highest bidder accepts the offer, they get it. Otherwise, it is offered to the one with the second highest points and it goes on.
Private owners

We don’t have points here. It is a first come, first serve rule so you must be quick.

  1. Blocket
  2. KOMBO
  3. Lägenheter i Linköping – Öppen grupp
  4. Lägenheter i Linköping
  5. Accommodation for Students @ Linköping

I said, you must be quick but you also, should be very cautious. If you are looking for accommodation through direct owners I would NOT recommend paying them anything, until you come here and sign the contract.

Accommodation here could be checked already now but sometimes, it could be a very last-minute offer as well. Depends on whether you prefer to procrastinate or not 😉

I wish you all the best in 2024 and good luck with your upcoming study decisions!
