If there is something that Sweden has an abundance of, it is beautiful nature. Especially now that autumn is here and the leaves feature a unique palette of golden colors, exploring Östergötland seems like wandering around in an autumn theme park.

After finishing my exam period, I finally had the time to explore the surrounding area of Norrköping by going on a hike along the Ågelsjön runt, which is a 10 kilometers loop that goes through the Ågelsjön nature reserve. You can find more detailed information about the Ågelsjön runt by visiting this link.

The highlights of my hike were definitely the amazing autumn colors and diverse parts of nature along the route. As part of the route also features steeper parts, I recommend it for people with some hiking experience.

Unfortunately, in autumn, the weather in Sweden has a high chance of rain. However, as most Swedish people like to say: “There is no bad weather, just bad clothing!” Therefore, having the right equipment and outerwear gear is essential to avoid making the hike a wet experience.

Raincoat and Umbrella: When hiking in the rain for a longer time, wearing a raincoat or rain poncho is indispensable. In addition, carrying an umbrella with you will decrease the overall amount of water you are exposed to.

Gloves: Gloves are important to keep your hands warm, especially when carrying an umbrella. They also help to protect your fingers when looking for support on trees or rocks.

Large plastic bag: A plastic bag is great if you want a dry spot to sit on during a break and if, after the hike, you want to collect your wet clothes.

Lunch: Along the route, there is a shelter where you can take a break, so do not forget to bring your lunch. A sandwich or wrap is the easiest to carry and best packed in a zip-up freezer bag.

Dry clothes for changing: After my hike, I definitely had a fair share of rain, so carrying a pair of dry socks and a shirt you wrapped up in a plastic bag will be something you will look forward to after the hike.

Solid, waterproof shoes: Ensure your footwear can handle wet and muddy conditions because small puddles and rivers due to rain will be more challenging than the water from above. So, some waterproof hiking shoes or leather boots are essential.

The Ågelsjön runt starts at Hultsbruks parkering close to Åby, so to get to the starting point of the route, you first need to get to Åby Centrum. Take Bus 12, which leaves every 30 min from Norrköping from your most convenient stop, and get off at Åby Centrum. From Linköping, you first have to take the train to Norrköping.

You can then travel from Åby Centrum to Hultsbruks parkering by local transport (small vans for 4 people) by calling the order center on 0771-71 10 20 at least two hours before you start your journey.

The best ticket option for me was the Östergötland 24-hour off-peak ticket, and for local transport, you can buy a special on-demand ticket, which you can find in the app if you select special tickets. Getting back to Norrköping will be the same procedure: first taking the local transport and then connecting to the bus in Åby. Regarding the planning, the hike takes around 4–5 hours, so with the travel time, you should plan to spend around 6 hours.

Stay tuned for more exciting outdoor adventures as I continue to explore the stunning beauty of Swedish nature!
