Hi again!

A few weeks ago, I wrote about what a day in my life as a Master’s student looks like (check that out if you like!). Next up, I’ll be writing about why I chose to come and study for my Master’s program at Linköping University.

First, let me tell you some facts about LiU.

  1. LiU opened its doors in 1975 as the sixth university in Sweden
  2. 37,600 students study at LiU
  3.  – from which 800 are international students
  4. LiU offers 135 study programs, of which 26
    are international programs in English
  5. LiU has 4 different Campuses, two in Linköping (Valla & US), one in Norrköping, and one in Stockholm

But why did I choose to come to LiU?

As I was looking for a pretty specific field, sustainable development, I did not have that many options. I knew I wanted to come to Sweden as it is very well known for its sustainability values and practices. There are several universities in Sweden that offer programs in sustainable development, such as Lund University and Uppsala University. However, I chose LiU, and I am 100% happy with my choice!

The Master of Science for Sustainable Development at LiU has a lot of diverse courses, whereby you can look into a lot of different fields and disciplines. As sustainable development in general is fairly broad, it was important to me to find a program that gave me the opportunity to explore my different options within the field. In the 3rd semester, the program also offers the opportunity to go abroad for an internship or exchange semester. However, LiU also has strong connections to other universities in Sweden, it is therefore also possible to study a semester at a different university in Sweden. This, for me, was very important as I want to keep my options open.

Another reason why I chose LiU is that it is quite a young university. This is noticeable in a few ways:

  • The programs offered by LiU are very up-to-date and innovative
  • The campus buildings are new and modern (check out Studenthuset on Campus Valla!)
  • The study programs are very open for feedback, reflection and they are always ready to change and adapt

LiU’s vision is therefore “A university of international standing, where people and ideas converge and develop.” After studying at LiU for more than 2 months now, I really feel that LiU lives up to its vision.

What I also liked is that the international programs often have small classes. My class, for example, only consists of 15 people. This makes the program quite personal and it is easy to get to know people. Generally, the student life at LiU is amazing. The university has many different traditions, associations, parties, extracurricular courses, activities, and so on. Linköping itself is a very nice little city, full of everything you need, cute cafes, a cinema, multiple gyms, and big grocery stores (even an Ikea!). Besides that, it is also very nicely located between Malmö and Stockholm. Within 2-2,5 hours, you can be in both bigger cities. The nature in and surrounding Linköping is another thing that really pushed me to study here. It is an incredibly green city with a lot of forests, lakes, and outdoor sports possibilities.

Therefore, I think LiU has everything you need for an amazing student life!

If you have any questions, please let me know.

See you next time!

/ Fleur, Master of Science for Sustainable Development
