In my last blog post before the summer break, I wanted to remind you of a few things you shouldn’t forget to prepare before moving to Linköping this summer. The first important thing to do is to check your Master’s roll call date. Everything concerning your move should be planned around the roll call, as it is a mandatory event to secure your place in the master’s programme. Last year my roll call was on the 22nd of August, but I decided to come to Linköping a week earlier to get settled. If you have the opportunity to do the same, I highly recommend it!

Other important dates are the arrival days offered by LiU. Of course, these are not the only days when it is possible to arrive in Linköping, but the university offers some extra help on these days. If you arrive on another day, I would still recommend visiting the campus on one of these days to meet new people and get some information about the first steps as a new student here at LiU.

The biggest preparations of course concern VISA related issues and housing arrangements. I hope you have been starting to organise yourself concerning these two things already. For some help, I wrote a blogpost about housing earlier this year and LiU provides lots of helpful information on VISA applications here.

Even though Sweden is a country where you will be able to speak English in everyday life, I would still recommend that you familiarise yourself with the Swedish language beforehand. This will make it easier to understand your surroundings and hopefully reduce the culture shock. It is also a good idea to read about Swedish culture or listen to the podcast “Fika with us” by us international students here at LiU.

And if you want to be extra prepared, it will save you a lot of stress later on if you start to familiarise yourself with some of the bureaucratic steps you will have to take once you are in Sweden. So it’s a good idea to understand what a Swedish personal number is and why you’ll need one when you move here.

I hope these have been some useful tips to help you prepare for your move to Sweden. I wish you all the best with your preparations and a wonderful summer!

All the best,

Jule
