Hej everyone! I hope you are all fine!

Today I wanted to write about what things I thought were the best to bring in my suitcase after I arrived in Sweden. I can imagine that many of you are already thinking which things you should buy before leaving your country and which things you might not forget.

When we move to a new place for a long period we always fill the suitcase with many things, some unnecessary and in other cases we forget important things. In this post, I will tell you what things are essential and what things are not so much when packing your suitcase.

First of all, an important thing is to take all the documentation, health card, covid passport, ID card, passport, accommodation contract and the documents you need from the university, either on paper or pdf. It is recommended that you carry them with you in your backpack and not in your suitcase, in case you lose them or need them on the way.

Secondly, regarding money, many students make the mistake of bringing a lot of cash, but it is not really worth it, because you can pay for everything with a credit card. I recommend that you verify that you do not have high commissions when paying in another currency with your bank. I got a new card to pay in Sweden. Some recommendations can be Revolut or Bnext.

Regarding to clothes that we should add to our suitcase is essential warm clothes, scarves, hats and gloves. Gloves will be key when cycling. In the season of September and June you can wear short sleeves, you don´t need to bring too many, but they will be useful during that the begining of the first semester and the end of the second semester. Think about what clothes are comfortable enough to wear and ride. Some of the skirts and dresses in my suitcase are very uncomfortable when biking and I hardly wear them. They are things I could avoid bringing.

Believe it or not, a bathing suit might be a good option. Some of the buildings in Ryd have saunas, which I recommend you use. Flip flops, towels and bathing suits can be useful. Also for bathing in the nearby lakes in the summer season!

On the other hand on the subject of footwear, I avoided bringing sandals as I have not worn them all year. And I chose shoes that do not slip in the snow, preferably boots with a good soles.

If you don’t have a lot of winter clothes at home, I recommend that you don’t get overwhelmed  while packing and bring what you have, then during the first weeks here you can look in the second-hand stores in town. You will be surprised by the great variety of clothes they have and you will save some space in your suitcase and find cheaper clothes.

I hope it has been useful. Do you think I have forgotten something? Let me know!
