My dear readers,

Today I want to tell you about a special Swedish celebration, formally known as Valborgsmässoafton but more commonly known as Valborg. Did you guys know that Valborg is actually an old female name from the saint Valborg? Its a less known fact if I am going to be honest, most people just know Valborg for the fun activities you can do.

This celebration falls every year on 30th April and since I have began my studies in Linköping, my friends and I have a tradition to go down to Trädgårdsförening (TF) with a picnic blanket and some snacks. We hoped for good weather and no rain, which it turned out to be….THANK GOD!!! A tradition of Valborg that students of LiU do is wear their overalls (ovve). Last year, my friends and I were unaware of this tradition so we came dressed normally but this year we all wore our ovve and it was so comfortable to move around in and kept me warm when there was an occasional cold breeze or the sun disappeared amidst the clouds. Look at me trying to speak fancy English 😉

Most people go to TF pretty early in the morning, around 08:00 am or 08:30 am but I went around 13:00 and the place was packed as you can see in the cover image. We luckily found a spot after quite a bit of hunting and everyone brought some snacks so we just had a good time together in the sun with food and music. The music was quite nice, it was a mix of concert and DJ vibes, which I really loved.

Overall, if you’re an international student at LiU, you should definitely come to TF and celebrate with everyone, it is a super nice feeling and Valborg nowadays is to welcome the wonderful spring season, with the days getting longer, warmer and it being lighter outside. If you are up for a more evening celebration, there is always a bonfire to go to, for some cosy vibes as well. I hope this inspires you to come to Valborg next year and if you were there this year, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Till next time my readers,

Shiv <3
