Hej Friends,

Are you looking for a country to take your higher education abroad? Let me express my thoughts on why I choose Sweden as my study destination. You will like it.

Education system

As an international student studying in Sweden, I’ve had the opportunity to experience the country’s education system firsthand. From my perspective, the education system is interesting and more international, providing a variety of studying and learning activities in the classroom.  As a student at Linköping University (LiU), I’ve been exposed to a range of different teaching methods. I’ve attended lectures, seminars, group work, workshops, lab activities, and self-study sessions. The focus is not on memorizing theories, but rather on the process of thinking creatively and critically about our own opinions. This was a new experience for me as an international student, and I had to adapt to the education system in the first few months.  Initially, I found it challenging to adapt to the new way of learning. However, after a few months, I realized that studying in Sweden was the best choice I could have made. The freedom to do things in our own way has really helped to develop my skills. The focus on critical thinking has given me the ability to observe things differently, which is an essential skill in today’s rapidly changing world.

Everyone speaks English

Before I applied to study abroad, I was hesitant about going to a non-native English-speaking country. I was afraid that I would struggle to communicate with locals during my study period. However, during my university search, I discovered that Sweden ranks highly on the English Proficiency Index. As a result, I felt more confident about my decision to study in Sweden. Once I arrived in Sweden, I found that everyone speaks English when it is necessary. I was relieved to discover that I could communicate easily with everyone. It was a huge weight off my shoulders and allowed me to focus on my studies and enjoy my time in Sweden. Of course, it’s always a good idea to learn the local language when studying abroad. I decided to take Swedish language classes. Learning Swedish is a great way to connect with locals and learn more about Swedish culture. Swedish is also more similar to English words, making it easier to learn than other languages. Learning Swedish is an added advantage for me, especially when it comes to socializing with natives. Additionally, knowing Swedish is an asset when it comes to job hunting. Many employers in Sweden prefer candidates who are bilingual and can speak both Swedish and English.

Sustainability promotor

Living in Sweden has been an eye-opening experience when it comes to sustainability. As a master’s student in Strategic Urban and Regional Planning, I chose to study in Sweden because of its huge focus on sustainability in various fields. From the moment I arrived, I realised that sustainability is a priority in Sweden. In fact, Sweden is one of the best countries in the world that promotes sustainability both environmentally and socially. Sweden’s main goal is to overcome climate challenges by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting renewable energy and fossil-free nations. As a student, I have had the opportunity to experience sustainable cities and neighbourhoods during my study period. I am even living in one of the modern sustainable neighbourhoods located near Linköping University, which is a perfect example of Sweden’s commitment to sustainability.

Student culture

Student culture in Sweden is fascinating and unique, and it is present in every university. During your university search, you will be surprised to discover that there are many activities and societies that you may not have experienced in your previous universities. Student societies and clubs are an integral part of the student culture in Sweden, and they offer you an opportunity to get to know your fellow students and have fun during your stay. Swedish universities are not only for studying, but they also provide an environment for you to enjoy your entire study period. By joining student clubs and societies, you can be part of various activities such as sports, music, theatre, and cultural events. This will enable you to immerse yourself in Swedish culture and make new friends while studying.

One example of a Swedish university with a rich student culture is Linköping University (LiU). The campus traditions and student culture at LiU are unique and engaging, and they provide an excellent opportunity for students to experience Swedish culture fully. If you are interested in learning more about the campus traditions and student culture in Sweden, you can check out the Linköping University website, and you may be surprised by what you find!

Until we meet next time,

hejdå (Good Bye)
