Are you itching to get away on a short trip now that the weather is improving? If you want to avoid spending too much on train tickets, you might want to consider taking a trip to Kalmar, a charming city located on the southeast coast of Sweden, known for its historic castle, picturesque streets, and beautiful beaches.

Getting there is easy with the Kalmar Länstrafik app, which offers train tickets that go around every two hours for a better price than SJ. It takes about three hours to reach Kalmar, and once you arrive, you’ll be right by the east coast. Although Kalmar is quite small, it’s a cute city that’s perfect for a short trip to escape Linköping for a day. If you don’t want to spend money on accommodation, you could even make a day trip out of it!

Once you’re in Kalmar, there are plenty of things to do. One of the city’s most popular attractions is Kalmar Castle, one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in Sweden. You can explore the castle’s halls and rooms, and even walk along the castle walls for a stunning view of the city. There are guided tours as well as many exhibitions, and student entry prices are around 140 SEK.

Another must-see in Kalmar is Gamla Stan, the old town where you can wander down cobblestone streets and admire the well-preserved 17th and 18th-century buildings. And of course, don’t forget to relax on the beach! There are several beautiful beaches in Kalmar, including Kalmarsundsbadet and Sandviksbadet, where you can sunbathe and enjoy the views of the Baltic Sea.

Art lovers won’t want to miss the Kalmar Art Museum, which is home to a diverse collection of art, and admission for students is only 40 SEK. And for a glimpse into the history and culture of Kalmar and the surrounding area, check out the Kalmar County Museum, which has exhibits on everything from the Vikings to modern-day life.

For a unique experience, you could also check out the cinema in Kalmar, which has some small rooms with bougie chairs. If you’re lucky enough to be alone in the room, it can make for a fantastic experience!

If you’re traveling by car, consider also going to Öland, Sweden’s second-largest island, which is truly beautiful in the spring. There are many cute cafes, parks, houses, and beaches to explore, and if you have the time, consider going all the way to the south and north of the island. You can visit the royal family’s summer house and gardens or explore Öland’s fantastic nature and bird-watching tower.
