My dear readers,

I joined the bachelor’s programme of Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine in August of 2021. Studying here at LiU has been one of the most fruitful experiences of my life and today, I want to share some thoughts about the bachelor’s thesis and to approach your professors.

I am in my 4th semester now and the next semester, I will be starting my thesis. If you ask me a year ago honestly I would have never thought of this day approaching. One fun fact is that my programme’s thesis happens in the penultimate semester, not in the last semester like most other programmes. This was very new for me as and I was a bit confused in the beginning but it makes sense based on our programme structure as we can apply our scientific knowledge from the four semesters above and work with something in the fifth.

As someone who was fascinated with cancer biology and drug research to help find biomarkers for cancer, I tried to reach out to all professors who work in that field. I advise you to do the same. Whatever area of research you are interested in, try to contact those professors. You can have a chat with them after class or send them an email.

For professors who work in your field of interest but don’t tutor you, please don’t be shy. I know it may seem tough to send an email and overwhelming as well but once you send it, you will feel so much better. Just tell them about why you are interested in their area of research and that’s more than enough.

Patience is very important in these things. Sometimes you will need to send 20 or even 30 emails to get a response. Sending reminder emails to professors is also okay and should be normalised because sometimes your emails can end up in spam. So naturally, you would need to send another email to professors for them to see it again.

Stay positive, have a lot of patience and everything will work out. Good luck to anyone who will do their thesis soon! šŸ˜€

Till next time,

Shivani <3
