My dear readers,

Yesterday was a very big day for me because I celebrated my first Holi ever. As you all know, I am an Indian who loves the culture, food and festivals of my country. Surprisingly enough, I had never celebrated Holi properly with colours. So it was a really SPECIAL day for me yesterday because I played with colours, danced a lot and enjoyed the Holi celebrations properly.

The festival was organised by Linköping Utsav, an Indian association which aims to bring Indian festivities in Linköping. They host events like Durga Puja, Diwali and Holi. Holi is the festival of colours and celebrates eternal love between the God Krishna and Radha, in Hindu culture.

The event started out with eating some yummy Indian food like chickpea curry (chana masala), curd rice, and Indian sweets. Then we had some quizzes about Indian culture and general knowledge, and I came 3rd place in one of them, so I felt kind of happy. Afterwards, we played this game called Housie which is very similar to Bingo and numbers were basically called and we had to poke holes on our number chits until we had a row complete. When a row or four corners were complete, the person would get a prize. I didn’t win that at all but I only had two numbers left so I was VERY close 🙁

Surprise, surprise, I also performed to a Bollywood dance at this Holi event with my dance group called Taal Nation. It was a lot of fun because it was our first performance together as a group. Joining Bollywood dance classes is one of the best decisions I have taken this year because I love to dance and it is a great way to exercise and also meet new people. Everyone applauded for us and complimented our performance which felt really good because we had put some effort into the dance. After the dance performance, the DJ played some nice Indian music and we all danced together as a big group. This reminded me of dancing at Indian weddings and it was a nice feeling to be reminded of home.

Now comes the fun part. Playing with all the beautiful colours. We all went outside, each got a plate of colours and started throwing colours at everyone. My white shirt had become so colourful, my hair and face were fully covered in all colours. It was so much fun because I had never had this experience in my life before. It was so special to me that I am considering not washing my white t-shirt for a while and framing it inside a mantle piece 😉 All in all, I am very thankful for this experience and happy to keep my Indian side alive through these special moments.

Till next time,

Shivani <3
