If you’re like me, one of the reasons for choosing to move to another country is the fascination with different cultures and landscapes. The best way to experience this is to travel around your new home country and this was exactly what I did in my first months here. In this post I’m going to describe my favourite trips and tell you what locations you should not miss while you’re in Sweden.

Stockholm

Of course you’ve heard of Stockholm. It’s Swedens capital city and maybe also the point where you entered the country for the first time via its international airport. But I think Stockholm is worth a longer visit than just as a stopover point on your way to Linköping!

Usually I’m not the biggest fan of travelling through cities as I prefer nature. But every time I’ve been to Stockholm I was surprised at how much beauty there is to be found in this city with its combination of a historic city center and the many little islands and waterways. I also recommend visiting the Vasa Museum, where you view an almost fully intact warship from the 17th century and the “Skårgard”, Stockholms Archipelago. Just a short ferry ride from the busy city center can you visit tranquil and wild islands.

Lapland

Many people dream of some day seeing the northern lights with their own eyes and it was the same for me. The best place to see them in Sweden is Swedish Lapland! Here you are north of the polar circle, giving you long hours of darkness in winter (and also a chance to see the midnight sun in summer). There are also many other unique activities to be done here like snowmobiling, dogsled rides and viewing elks and reindeer. My trip to Lapland was a experience I will remember forever. You can read more about it here.

The islands

Distinctive for Sweden are its big islands. You can see this unique culture for yourself on Gotland or Öland. Swedes love to spend their summer on these islands for their mix of good weather, historic attractions like castles and nordic runestones and the beautiful nature and views (the title image of this post was taken on Gotland). Both are easily reachable from Linköping and outside of the high season in summer (July and August) they can be surprisingly affordable!

If you’re feeling adventurous you can also take a boat tour to Gotska Sandön National Park, an uninhabited island in the middle of the Baltic Sea.

Göteborg

I recently visited Göteborg for a weekend and I found the city to be really cute and more interesting than I expected! Göteborg is Sweden’s second largest city, but it does not feel as metropolitan as Stockholm. There are also many little islands easily reachable by public ferry. My island-hopping excursion was a very good way to spend the day, as we learnt a lot about the way people live in these remote places and could experience the great nature on the islands.

The mountains

If you truly want to experience Sweden’s natural beauty I recommend you to head to the mountains in Sweden. If you like skiing you could go to the big ski resorts like Åre or Sälen. For those who prefer their vacation in nature and not with a big amount of other tourists, you should look at the national parks and nature reserves on the border between Sweden and Norway. Here you can find stunning natural beauty, great hiking trails and cozy little mountain cabins.

These are my travel tips within Sweden! I hope you find some inspiration for your own travels. If you have any further questions don’t hesitate to write a comment!
