I hope you are well and had a good start into the new month! Today I want to tell you a little story about how I finally saw the Northern Lights…

There are few things in the world as fascinating as the Northern Lights. This natural phenomenon is caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with the Earth’s magnetic field, resulting in a stunning display of colourful lights in the night sky.
As someone who has always been fascinated by the Northern Lights, I have wanted to see them for years. Last year there were a few nights when the Northern Lights were faintly visible in Linköping, but I missed them every single time.

I remember one night when we stood in the park for hours, but the visibility was just too bad to really make out any colours. Another night I missed the ideal hours because I fell asleep and had my phone on silent, so I didn’t see my friends’ texts. You can imagine how annoyed I was about that, haha.

This year I was determined not to make the same mistake again. I started researching which nights were the best to see the Northern Lights in Sweden and came across an app that helped me find the ideal times to see them. I used the app AuroraReach, but there are many others that work just as well. This way, I was able to keep up to date with weather conditions and magnetic activity in the area, and I received alerts when the chances of visibility increased in Linköping.

Last week, on Monday and Tuesday evenings, the alerts for visibility were finally high again. Monday took me by surprise, and I wasn’t out at the right time, so unfortunately, I missed them on Monday. It was so upsetting because I saw so many people posting about their experience in so many different countries and also right were I live in Linköping. But my friends and I didn’t give up hope. On Tuesday we decided to try again, and this time we drove to Lake Roxen, a picturesque place near Linköping. It was so dark there that you could count every star, and that sight alone was worth the drive out into the cold.

As we stood there in the darkness, we saw a green glow spread across the night sky, and as I took a photo, the sky began to glow in stunning shades of green, purple and red. I had never seen anything like it in my life. As I turned down the brightness of my pictures, I could see the lights dancing across the sky, interweaving and creating a magical spectacle that seemed almost unreal.

We were lucky enough to take some of the most beautiful pictures of the Northern Lights. It was truly a magical moment, there in the dark, surrounded by my friends and many other Swedish people that had ventured out to catch a glimpse of the aurora. The beauty of nature is truly remarkable, and the Northern Lights are a prime example.

So if you can’t go to the north of Sweden because you either don’t have the time or simply can’t afford it, don’t give up hope of seeing the Northern Lights here in Linköping. With a little determination, you might get lucky and see it right here!

Anyways, hope you are all having a good start into the week, and you’re inspired now to go on your very own hunt for the northern lights! Talk to you again soon, //M.
