Hello everyone,

I hope you had a good start to the new year and are ready to make the most of your time in Linköping! Since I’ve been living here, I’ve really enjoyed travelling and taking advantage of the great train and bus connections Linköping has to offer. This time I decided to go to Denmark, to Copenhagen!

If you thought about visiting Copenhagen before, you might know that it has quite the reputation for being expensive… and the assumption is not wrong, lol. This is why the trajectory for this trip was to do the most in a short time, and try to make it budget friendly.

There were four of us travelling, which was perfect to get a private four-bed room in a hostel. This was a great option because the hostel was right in the city centre and allowed us to walk to everything and save money on public transport, which is very expensive. So, I guess you could say tip 1: travel as a bigger group, which might get you cheaper tickets on SJ and also nicer rooms in hostels for similar prices. Also, if you can, travel throughout the week and don’t only get trains on the weekend, it will save you a ton of money.

1). Take a boat tour: On our first day we took a one-hour boat tour for about 100 dkk. It was not too expensive and fun to get a first overview of the city and decide how we wanted to walk later and which areas we wanted to have a closer look at. The tours are also guided, which is a fun way to learn more about the city and get some historic background on buildings and monuments. Also, it was nice to get some fun facts about Copenhagen.

2). Drinking coffee at Nyhavn: If the weather is kind to you and you have a few hours of sunshine, you should definitely take a walk at Nyhavn and find a spot in the sun for an (admittedly overpriced) coffee or hot chocolate. We were really lucky with the weather and enjoyed two hours of sunshine at Nyhavn, surrounded by the colourful houses, boats and the best atmosphere around. There is also a little coffee cart that drives around there serving fantastic lattes to warm you up while you stroll about. An absolute must see!

3). See Christiania: The Freetown Christiania in the midst of Copenhagen is another thing you should definitely have a look at in Copenhagen. The town operates on its own rules of which the first is zero violence. You are not supposed to take pictures entering Christiania, so if you are curious you will have to go and have a look yourself. There are art and craft shops to visit, cafes and food places, and nice places outside to sit and enjoy the sun.

4). Explore Christiansborg Palace: A place steeped in history, the former royal palace. You can visit different parts of the palace, for which there are different fees. However, there are always student tickets, so don’t forget to ask for a student price. If you don’t want to spend money, you can still visit the tower. Admission is free and you get a fantastic view over Copenhagen and the royal stables – all for free!

5.) The Royal library: If you are in Copenhagen, you absolutely must visit this library. The architecture is utterly incredible and, of course, admission is free. It’s also right on the waterfront, so not only do you have a beautiful view, but you can also sit outside by the water. There is also a small café and shop in the library that you should definitely explore.

And of course, just strolling around Copenhagen you will see tons of stunning buildings, flower markets, the cutest cafe’s and bookshops.. so what are you waiting for? 😉 Wherever you are, I hope you are having a fantastic time, talk to you again soon, //M
