Thinking of winter in a northern country like Sweden can invoke daunting expectations. Freezing temperatures, deep snowdrifts and short daylight hours may seem scary to you, especially if you’re not that used to a cold winter. But it is not all bad! Winter in Sweden also offers many fun experiences, that aren’t possible in other times. Follow these tips to make the most out of the cold season:

1. Proper clothes:

Swedes have a saying “There is no bad weather, just bad clothes”. I recommend you to take that to heart and get the proper winter clothes as soon as possible. Don’t wait to long, since freezing cold temperatures can arrive suddenly und unexpectedly even as early as late October. The most important piece of winter gear is your jacket, coat or parka. You should not cheap out here. Get one that fits you well and will always keep you warm! I also recommend good winter boots, since keeping your feet warm and dry in the snow is really important to avoid getting sick.

2. Cycle carefully in the snow:

Cycling is important to get around in Linköping. But if you wake up and see that there’s been a big snow dump overnight, then maybe reconsider your choice of transportation. While the bike paths will eventually be ploughed and salted so they are free of snow, this takes a while and cycling in the deep snow is not only very exhausting and slow, it can also be dangerous, as you don’t see any icy patches and could slip and fall easily! If you decide to bike though, go slowly, especially on downhills and around sharp turns.

3. Fika even more:

Fika is the swedish art of taking a break with a hot beverage and a pastry. In winter this gets even more important. A hot coffee can warm you up on a busy day and a kanelbullar gives you the energy to continue working. This really is a swedish winter tradition as all around the city you can see empty streets, but busy cafés while the snow falls.

4. Vitamin D to beat the darkness:

In the months around the winter solstice the days in Linköping get very short. This means the sun does not rise up high enough to supply you with enough Vitamin D, even if you’d spend the whole day outside! To combat the negative side effects, consider using Vitamin D supplements. You can find them in every supermarket or pharmacy.

5. Enjoy what Winter has to offer!

Last but not least, don’t forget that the winter can be an amazing experience for you. Maybe it is your first chance to try out many fun experiences like skiing, snowshoeing or ice skating. I also really love to take walks in nature after a fresh snowfall. Seeing the way the snow blankets the forest in white and hearing the “crunch, crunch” of your foot steps can be magical.

Everybody will enjoy winter in their own way, be it with a snowball fight in front of their house or with an epic trip to the polar circle to see the northern lights, but I definitely really recommend you to get out and enjoy this season!

Hej då!
