My dear readers,

Today I want to familiarise you with common Swedish words/phrases that you will hear a lot in your student life here at LiU. These are connected to the university and the student life as well, so when you hear them in public, you will no longer be confused.

  1. LiU = Linköping University
  2. Campus Valla = Main place of study for all the LiU programmes in Technical (TekFak) and Arts & Sciences (StuFF) faculties
  3. Campus US = Medical campus for all medical faculty students
  4. Campus Norrköping = LiU Campus Located in Norrköping
  5. Studenthuset: The eye candy library situated at Campus Valla
  6. Eftersläpp = an afterparty
  7. Nollan = students who are newly admitted to the university, they start from zero (noll)
  8. Ettan = what the newly admitted students become after completing Nolle-P
  9. Nolle-P = the welcome weeks
  10. Fadder = Mentors who take care of you during your first year, this is usually for bachelor’s programmes
  11. Festeri = Party committees at LiU
  12. Section = A group of people from each programme that work to better the academic and social life of their programme
  13. Gyckel = A song with re-written lyrics, performed by different party committees
  14. Kårhus: Union House
  15. KK = Kårhus Kollektivet, a union house in the city where you can party
  16. HG = Ryds Herrgård, a union house in Ryd
  17. Kårallen = Union house in Campus Valla
  18. Örat = Union house in Campus US (the only medical union house)
  19. Trappan = Union house in Campus Norrköping
  20. Ovve = Overalls, they are a big tradition at LiU
  21. Kravall = A party where everyone wears their ovve
  22. Finsittning = A fancy student dinner/banquet; usually drink wine
  23. Fulsittning = A casual dinner; usually drink fulvin

Note that you won’t be experiencing all the terms above as some are for bachelor students only but they are still cool terms to know and as a bachelor’s student myself, I thought I would give you a whole overview. I hope this mini dictionary helped you.
