Right now with a new semester ahead a lot of new exchange students arrive at LiU. You can therefore clearly feel a welcoming spirit around the university especially at studenthuset. In summer generally way more international students arrive at LiU, since the master programs usually start then and also a higher number of exchange students chose the winter semester to go abroad. Accordingly, the number of arrival events then is even higher than now. Today I wanted to give you an overview what the university provides for you on the arrival days and also how the student associations complete this.

First of all: What are arrival days? There will be several arrival days in August this summer for the admitted students. Those include then a free shuttle service from the airport or the central station to the university and also from there to your accomodation. Especially, since international students usually arrive with heavy luggage this can be extremly helpful. Secondly, the international office in student huset has extented opening hours on the arrival days. They will welcome you there and provide you with a checklist on how to get started at the university and in Linköping. Furthermore, you can of course pester them with questions and they will be happy to answer them all. Besides the international office, usually the student associations gather as well in the entrance hall of student huset those days to get to know you and hand out information. Surely, you will as well find some free fika somewhere at their stands.

Furthermore there is now and there will be in summer a packed schedule with activities planned by the student associations for the new students. They are designed for you to meet new people and reach from a scavenger hunt through the university over game nights to caraoke evenings. The most popular activity in summer was a barbecue at Skaland an open space in Ryd, which I really enjoyed since it was an easy opportunity to start talking to new people. I would recommend every new student to join those activities since everything abroad is easier if you face it with friends. Moreover, besides activities to meet new people the student associations also organise tours around campus and tours around the city so you will know your way around faster. I remember joining the campus tour back in summer with nearly 30 degrees outside (seems far away now) and it really helped me understand how to find my way around Campus Valla.

The grand finale of the welcome activities of LiU is the big Kalas festival. It happens every summer on Campus Valla and it is a free festival for all new and old students of LiU! It features lots of great food, fun activities and live music acts. LiU just announced that this year Galantis will be playing there!! Before the festival starts in the afternoon, there is a fair happening close to Campushallen. There, really every association connected to the university has a stand to present themselves. It is a great chance to find the right associations for you to join or to get to know your student union or student section.

In conclusion, I would really recommend to plan your arrival in Linköping according to the arrival days organised by the university (and by your roll call of course, more information on that later). Furthermore, I am sure you will have lots of fun joining the welcome activities and the Kalas festival! I hope now you know that there is no need to worry about your arrival in Linköping!

Until soon,

Jule
