Linköping is not the biggest city, at least if you come from outside Sweden. In Sweden it is the seventh biggest city, which sounds bigger as it is. It has around 160 thousand inhabitants, which is of course way less than Stockholm. Nevertheless, I decided to move to Linköping obviously and I would love to tell you why.

Being spontaneous

I am originally from a bigger city (one million inhabitants), which of course brings a lot of advantages with it as well, but also some things that do annoy me. For example, it is not easy to spontaneously meet up with your friends in a big city. My friends at home don’t really live in the same part of the city as me, so it often takes me at least 40 minutes to get to their places. This often hindered me already to spontaneously go and meet them. Here in Linköping, I can either just walk by foot to friends flats or take my bike for ten to fifteen minutes. Same goes for activities: I am at Ryds Herrgård in five minutes and same goes for the university and another 15 minutes for the city centre, where you can find a lot of things to do.

Knowing your way around

When I first arrived in Linköping, the new impressions were amazing but at the same time overwhelming. Everywhere I wanted to go I needed to check the way online and especially Ryd bears the possibility of getting lost. The moment I felt at home was closely connected to the time where I did not need any help with finding my way around anymore. Obviously, this point comes quicker in a smaller city. On top of that, I love that in a smaller city you usually meet someone you know by accident when you leave the house. It can generate a big home feeling to me when I can greet or chitchat with people on the street, simply because we met one or two times before.

Student town

I love that Linköping is a student town dominated by students. Out of approximately 160 thousand inhabitants are 32 thousand students. This means nearly on fifth of everyone that lives here is a student like you and me. You can clearly feel that in the city live. Coming here I didn’t expect a lot of the city and night life of Linköping, but I was clearly mistaken. The countless student associations of LiU organise not only events for everyone at the beginning of the semester but all year round. This can be even overwhelming at times since it can be hard to say no to those exiting activities. Nevertheless, your student life here won’t be boring at all!

Close to nature and the city

Last but not least, Linköping brings two important elements together: the city life with the nature. As I have already written many times, you are really close to beautiful nature reserves from Linköping. You can therefore spend the beginning of the day shopping in the city, then go for a hike in Tinnerö and finish the day up at a bar in the city again, if you like. Here, you don’t have to choose between those two things. There are also busses going everywhere taking you to nature reserves that are even more out of town, but still easy to reach.

All the best,

Jule
