6 thing you can do to enjoy Christmas in Sweden!
During the month of December or even before in November you can start feel the Christmas and lights spirits. Unlike my home country, celebrating Christmas is taking so long with many activities and joyful spirit. When I first experience Christmas period in Sweden in 2021 I was so happy and surprised with the amazing decoration, lights, activities, food traditions, celebrations, and more. And that’s made me feel I am not lonely as there are many things to do even if you are alone in Linköping! And here are some things you can enjoy and do during the Christmas period!
1. Visit the Christmas market in Linköping:
There are many cozy places for Christmas market around the city where you can find and buy nice presents, cheese, wine, or gingerbread. One of these markets is Gamla Linköping where you can actually travel back with time to experience the countryside in Sweden for hundred or even more years than that.
2. Attend one of the Christmas events that run by one of the student associations:
By attending one of these events, you will experience yourself how the Swedish people celebrate Christmas by testing the Swedish Christmas dinner and fika. When I experienced it myself, I know that they serve a lot of smoked salty fish, sausages (where they call it prince korv), and potatoes. I enjoyed it myself so much, so I encouraged you to try it when you are here in Linköping!
3. Ice-skates across frozen lakes or peaceful skiing adventures:
In that time of the year the Swedish people love to spend sometime outdoor together and enjoy the snow. So, when it is glistening ice, they go for outdoor and indoor halls to ice-skating. In Linköping and beside campus Valla you can experience it in gym campushallen or you can also go to the city centre at SAAB arena and enjoy it for free.
4. Attend church activities:
If you are a religious person or if not but you love the spirit, you can attend some of the church activities. In the church they also organizing traditional dinners and serve all the Swedish Christmas food.
5. Bake gingerbread home:
This is one of the most fun things you can ever do as you can make it with your friends and have fun gathering or maybe with your corridor mates if you live in a corridor room. In a way or another gingerbread of as the Swede call it Pepparkakor is consider as tradition that lots of Swedish family do during this time of the year, so it is linked to Christmas celebrations.
6. Visit the Swedish Lapland:
You can go far north to experience the northern lights which is magical. Up north there are small villages that are surrounded with snowy mountains and if you are lucky, you can meet a reindeer 😊. There you can also skiing or ride a snowmobile on a frozen lake but get ready and prepared for the real cold 😀 and it might be -20 or even more.
There are many more things you can do to enjoy Christmas in Sweden and specially Linköping even if you are alone! and you can always check https://visitlinkoping.se/en/start to see what are activities are happening.
