Hej Friends,

I would like to take you to my classroom for a while. The learning activities at Linkoping University are quite different. The learning experience is really interesting for me as an international student. I adapted to the new learning environment very quickly as the Swedish education system is well organized.  As master’s students in Strategic Urban and Regional planning, we have different learning activities.

Lectures

I have a maximum of three or four lectures in each course and lectures help me to get overall knowledge about the course content. On other days I have free time to self-learn. The maximum learning time last 1 hour and 45 minutes.  The most interesting tradition is every 45 minutes I have a break. Usually in Sweden, it is Fika time. Inside the classroom, I never feel bored because we don’t use the regular location for lectures and workshops. It changes every day. I usually find my classroom through LiU App.

Group work

Group works are one of the most interesting learning activities at Linköping University. Sharing ideas with students from different backgrounds and different countries always motivates me. I learn many new insights from my classmates.  Most students prefer to work in Studenhuset because there are plenty of spaces available for group activities. Even if you want to work in a separate space, you can book a room for a few hours. However Usually, most of the group works end up with a report and presentation. The classroom is really active during the presentation days and we all enjoy the day without getting over-stressed.

Seminars and workshops

The seminar is a new studying method for me which I never experienced in my previous studies. It is like sharing ideas about a common topic relating to the subject area. The seminar sessions help me to broaden my knowledge of the subjects. It helps to improve my skills so far. Everyone gets a chance to express their ideas and give feedback on others’ work. I enjoy every time I spend with my classmates. Linköping University has plenty of studio rooms for discussions.  As I mentioned earlier non of the activities last longer many hours. Then I can participate in learning activities more actively without feeling overwhelmed.

Self-studies

Independent studies are one of the most important methods that I realized in Sweden. You have at least three days per week for your self-studies. As I mentioned earlier, teachers help us to get an overall knowledge about the subject, but the rest of the time you can focus on your own studies. Most of the time I spend in Studenthuset which is very comfortable for me to learn. I usually complete my assignments in Studenthuset. One thing I need to mention is that the University libraries’ online facility is very useful for me to find extra reading materials.

Exams

I am usually afraid of the term ‘exams’ since my previous studies were stressing me during the exam period. Most of the time I faced my exams at the end of the semester and I had to memorize at least five or six subject areas until I finish my exams. But as a master’s student in strategic urban and regional planning, I have take-home exams at the end of every course. Another important thing is I can do my exam anywhere I prefer. I am really interested in that because I don’t have to take any stress on exams. I just need to read my course literature before the exam. I feel that the open book exam is really productive. I usually prefer to do my exams at home, when I get tired I can make my own coffee and take a little break.

Until we meet next time,

hejdå (Good Bye)

Shesha
