If you are fighting and aiming for a more sustainable world like me, then this blog is for you! To choose Sweden as a country to pursue my master’s degree in was for reasons. One of these reasons is that Sweden is the first country in the world that cares about sustainable development even before the Paris agreement in 2015 as it was the first country in the globe to initiate a carbon tax. This tax was on carbon-intensive fuels like oil and natural gas, and even has heavily cut down its dependency on fossil fuels.

Of course, the above sentences can be easily found on the internet but based on my experience living in Sweden and in the fifth bigger city in Sweden I can confess that I can see what Sweden is trying to do to reduce the emissions and move towards a sustainable future. However, that was one of the biggest reasons to come to Sweden to study Science for sustainable development!

Firstly, when I look at the transportation system, almost all the public transportation use biogas as fuel for cars, buses and trucks of various sizes. For example, there is a company in Linköping called Tekniska Verken, this company manage all types of waste from households and businesses, through recycling centres and then produce biogas, electricity, and district heating and cooling just from waste! As part of my education of the program at Linköping university I had the opportunity to visit Tekniska Verken and see how they work and how they contribute to the overall sustainability goals.

Beside that, Sweden is promoting for using sustainable transport solutions such as bikes. The country is doing that by facilitating the more convenient roads for bikes. For me, I always prefer to bike than taking the bus or driving a car as for me it is more convenient. Actually, I was and still have the same impression of how I can manage all my errands within minutes using my bike and that’s not only sustainable and save a lot of time than waiting for a public transport but also it is more friendly for a student budget.

So, I do encourage you to buy a bike when you come to Sweden, and you will feel free moving everywhere without any limitations as from my own experience Sweden and Linköping is bike-friendly country with a well-developed network of cycle paths in and around the towns and cities and well-marked cycle routes around the country.

Also, if you do not know how to bike or even you are not sure about your biking skills, do not worry there are many associations teaching cycling for free, one of them is the red cross in Linkoping, where they are organizing weekly sessions for those who want to learn. So, just give it a try ;). While visitlinkoping.se providing information and cycle map in Linkoping where you can visit as many of places there just with your bike and here is the link https://visitlinkoping.se/en/node/1550
