Today I want to show you a few possibilities you have here in Linköping and at LiU to stay active and sporty. I personally perfer ball sports like tennis and badminton but there are of course many more possibilities. To me it is very impressive how dedicated Sweds are to their sport at least as far as I whitnessed and it inspired me picking up some old sports and new exercises.

Tennis

My favourite sport will forever be tennis. Luckily LiU has a big range of associations and among those of course also a tennis association. In the beginning of this semester they had a few possibilities of try-out trainings, where everyone interested could join. Pay attention that Sweds and Swedish organisations/associations publish such possibilities on Facebook even though in my knowledge the rest of the world has said goodbye to this platfrom. Here in Sweden nevertheless, you will not be able to know what is happening without checking Facebook. After the try-outs I could decide whether or not I want to join the association for a little fee and got the needed information for the upcoming trainings. They train every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 pm to 10 pm in Linköpings sportscenter. To join you register for a training or again check their Facebook group to see if you can take someones spot, since if you cannot make it, you will post it there to give others the opportunity. I can highly recommend a sports association of LiU since it is not only good for you mental health to work out but it is a great chance to meet Sweds and get to know them!

Hiking

Of course, hiking is one of the best ways to both stay active and explore the beautiful Swedish nature at the same time. If you are looking for nice hiking routes, you can either check previous blogposts here or as I have recently discovered you can use Komoot. This is an app where you can search a nature reserve (there are endless in Sweden) and it will show you plenty of hiking routes of different difficulties and length. Of course, you can always move from the route but in my opinion it is always great to have an orientiation to begin with.

Badminton

Another sport I enjoy is Badminton. Luckily, there is the possibility to play badminton right at Campus Valla of LiU. You can book a badminton court at Campushallen for a good price and without being a gym member. Usually, I went with a lot of friends and booked several courts. We even played a little spontanious tournament. What I like most about Badminton is that everyone can join and will make progress quickly. We always had a lot of fun!

Ice Skating

Since it is winter now and tempratures keep going down, you can enjoy ice skating at several spots in the city. The one I checked out (you can see it in the cover picture) is also close to Campus Valla and is called Isovalen. It offers a great space to ice skate and if you bring your own skates you can join the fun for free! If you don’t have your own set of ice skates you can borrow them from Campushallen for a cheap price. Enjoy!

Biking

Last but not least, my fitness has already improved just by biking daily. As often mentioned, bikes are an absolute necessity in Linköping since the city has great bike lanes and it is usually the quickest way to get somewhere. Even now in wintertime these lanes are well cleared and you are still good to take the bike to most places. But I advice you to still be careful and slower than usual and of course always wear a helmet! I have been lucky enough to not fall from my bike yet but I know a lot of people that did and regret not wearing their helmet! So be smart and stay safe!!

Until next time,

Jule
