About 2 weeks ago I went to the Netherlands to represent the University at an international student fair in Utrecht. Afterwards I spend one day in (rainy) Amsterdam before my flight back home. Here are my tips on what to do on a day like that!

First of you need to know that Linköping has a small (tiny) airport with 2 Gates and exactly one commercial flight connection: the KLM City Hopper to and from Amsterdam. So, getting to Amsterdam is fairy easy from Linköping as there is no need to go all the way to Arlanda Stockholm or anywhere else. If you want to take a small trip with your friends or meet up with friends from abroad Amsterdam is therefore a great option.

As you arrive at Schipol outside of the city centre, you need to take a train to Amsterdam Centraal. I recommend you download the Nederlandse Spoorwegen App to find available connections and also buy tickets through the app. In Amsterdam there is a tram. I chose not to use it at all during my time there but if you stay for some time longer it might make sense to get a day pass for it.

From the Central station you can just walk straight into the Binnenstad where you will find a lot of stores (Yes I did a bit of shopping myself while there, just make sure it all fits in your luggage on the way back).

From there you can walk to one of the iconic canals that surround the old town. Or you can do a boat tour at one of the many piers that are located all around the city. I chose to stay on foot though.

While I was walking along the canals, I found the Bloemenmarkt where they sell all sorts of flower and plant buds, mostly tulips of course. I thought it was quite impressive to see the variety and also how cheap some of them were.

On a rainy-day Amsterdam also offers a lot of different museums to visit. The most known are the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. I recommend you get tickets beforehand as the lines to the Rijksmuseum was quite long. I also wasn’t able to get into the Van Gogh Museum this time around as all the tickets were sold out. So, plan ahead of time if these are things you would like to visit. There is also the Anne Frank House which you can visit. I have been there before years ago and I still remember it very well. It was quite intimidating to walk through the house and learn about the conditions the Frank family lived in.

After a long day of walking around and enjoying the city, I decided to take some rest in one of the many cafés and read a little, before taking the train back to the Airport. Overall, it was a bit of an exhausting day but I’m glad I got to see Amsterdam again.

I hope this gives you some ideas and information for your own trip to Amsterdam!

All the best,

Emily
