Hello everyone! In this post, I want to write about the best ways to travel around Sweden as a student and what has been my experience regarding the different transport as well as my recommendation.

First of all, to move around the city everybody recommends buying a second-hand bike. if you arrive at Linköping University during the second semester you will find some students selling their second-hand bikes and they are very easy to find. If you arrive in the month of august there are many apps you can use like Facebook Market or Blocket, as well as some bike stores around the student area. The whole city of Linköping is adapted to moving around by bike and getting from the student areas to the University is very convenient and easy, so I recommend a bike. You can also easily find scooters that you can pay for through apps and they are all over the city.

On the other hand, we have the public bus that works quite well and allows you to move anywhere in the city. On the bus, you need an app where you have to buy your ticket, you can also pay by credit card on the bus but you will not be able to pay for your ticket in cash on the spot. The app you need is Östgötatrafiken.

To move around the region, you can get your train tickets the same way you get tickets for the local bus. The application allows you to find the fastest way and the path you need to take to get anywhere in the Östergötland region.

If you want to move around Sweden, I recommend you to use Flixbus to find buses and SJ or Snalltaget to find train tickets. Both companies either train or bus has a great variety of schedules and very reasonable prices, so you have no excuse to travel from Linköping to any part of Sweden. Personally, I find the train trip from Linköping to Malmo very nice especially when the whole landscape is snowy, it seems that you are in a movie scene.

If you want to travel to Linköping from abroad or vice versa, Linköping airport has daily flights to Amsterdam airport where you will find a lot of flights with connections to other countries. This is the way I travel back home for Christmas or summer vacations as I find it much faster and more comfortable than going to other airports. But if you live in a country closer to Sweden or if you want a more sustainable option, it is also possible to travel by train.

Finally, I want to mention that for those students or future students of Linköping University who are passionate about traveling, the ESN organization organizes trips during the semesters to different destinations like Lapland in the north of Norway Sweden, or Finland, trips to the Norwegian fjords, or shorter trips to different cities. I think it is a very interesting opportunity for all students as the trips are well-organized and are cheap and you can enjoy the company and the atmosphere among students.

Most of the companies that I mentioned before to travel have student discounts and I also recommend you look at the Mecenat app regularly because there you will find discounts on some transport and on accommodations which will make your trip much more affordable.

I hope you have found my recommendations for traveling around Sweden useful and I encourage you to make some trips to discover new places and learn about the culture of the country.
