Hello everyone, I’m Elena and I’m studying the Master’s Program in Design at Linköping University. This master’s has a duration of two years, and at the time of enrolment, you can choose 3 different tracks. In this post, I will tell you a little bit about these tracks, their subjects, and my personal experience.

First, I will describe what each track is about.
The first track is the Service Design track. In this track, you will learn how to design for everyone involved in the services getting to innovate in the processes and develop very interesting co-creation and design techniques and methodologies. Some of its subjects are Contemporary perspectives on value creation or Thinking with representations.

The second track is the sustainable design track. This is the track in which I am enrolled. You will not only learn how to solve environmental sustainability problems through design, but you will also deal with social and economic sustainability issues. In this track, we have subjects like Sustainable strategies or Design for sustainable everyday life.

The third track is the visual media track. It deals with design skills related to graphic design, augmented interaction, and information visualization among others. In this track, we find subjects such as Advanced visualization design or Augmented information spaces.

The service design and sustainable design tracks are mainly taught in Linköping during the first course. And in the second course, there will be some subjects that will be taught in Norrköping.

The social media track is taught during the first semester between Linköping and Norrköping, while the second course is entirely in Norrköping. Although it may seem a bit confusing, the university has a very frequent and free bus that connects both campuses.

All the tracks have subjects in common and specific subjects, it is very interesting to have classes and work groups with students from different tracks because we get different but interesting results.

One thing to highlight about this master’s is that during the 4 semesters you don’t need to choose subjects from the same track. You are free to choose what you are interested in and what knowledge you already have, and it offers great flexibility.

In my case, I have chosen the sustainability track but I have to admit that it has been very interesting to learn from the perspective of service design in my first year and I am looking forward to exploring more in-depth service design.

Some of my favorite subjects have been “Studio 1”, where we develop techniques for repairing and assembling objects, and explore prototyping techniques, “Norm-creative perspectives on design, power and change”, where we discover how certain designs are subject to certain rules and how to design out of them, and also, “Physical Interaction Design and Prototyping”, where we learned how to carry out prototypes with Arduino, paying attention to different forms of design.

Do you have any questions about this master’s? Ask me! I also recommend you to visit the Master’s website where you can find all the subjects, videos of the professors of the three tracks and more information.
