I have always wanted to visit Stockholm and since it is just a two-hour train ride away from my new home Linköping, my newfound friends and I quickly started planning a weekend away. Right after we finished our first course, it was the perfect way to celebrate with a little trip.

We went to Stockholm on a Friday by train and stayed at a cute little hostel right in the centre of Kvarteret Atlas. Since we arrived pretty late but still wanted to see the city a little bit, we left the hostel right away to go shopping for groceries. We were lucky and ran into a live recording of the finale of Idol, a Swedish singing competition. Still, we were too hungry to stay long, headed back to the hostel and cooked some pasta for us.

On Saturday we enjoyed a long walk in the old town of Stockholm, where we explored a cute bookstore and one of the narrowest little streets I have ever seen. After that we enjoyed watching the change of the guards at the palace’s outer courtyard. The ceremony lasts about 40 minutes and includes a military marching band and parade and is held every day from April 23 to August 31 at 12:15 pm on weekdays and at 1:15 pm on Sundays. It was especially interesting to see since I am not used to live in a country with a running royalty.

After a short break my group of friends split up in two smaller groups to explore the museums of Stockholm. Since there is such a big choice it wasn’t easy to decide where to go all together. Some of us decided to go to the famous Vasa Museum and some others (including me) decided to have fun and went to the ABBA museum. The entry price is rather expensive, but it was totally worth it. The museum is really interactive meaning we got to record our own single, go on a virtual reality helicopter ride and perform with holograms of ABBA live on stage! (Some people asked for our signature!) Especially if you have some fun friends around, I recommend you to go and perform as crazy as you can.

One of my favourite things about Stockholm is that boat rides are part of the normal transportation. We had a day ticket for the trains on Saturday and with that we were able to take a boat to go to the ABBA museum. On our way back we were lucky enough to see the sunset on the boat.

On our last day we decided to explore Södermalm, which is so far my favourite part of the city. There you can find the cutest coffee shops, the Fotografiska (another great museum) and a nice fleamarket. The fleamarket “Hornstulls Marknad” happens right next to the water and offers great food, clothes, jewellery and even live music. Since the jazz music and the coffee was so good we stayed pretty long and then finished the day of with a great walk on Söder Mälarstrand which offers a beautiful view.

Very tired but very happy we went back to Linköping by bus. I hope you enjoyed my tips for you in Stockholm and that you are now ready to explore the city on your own!

All the best,

Jule
